Julio and 'The Haus' win rookie contracts - Lockdog, Dags and Beany overlooked.

The T.C.A. has given a clear indication about the future of Tasmanian cricket by awarding four rookie contracts to young local players.

Two University players, 22 year old Ben Hilfenhaus and 20 year old Tim Paine have been awarded rookie contracts for the 2005/2006 season along with left handed Glenorchy batsman Dane Anderson and Westbury legspinner Jason Shelton.

Rhett Lockyear, Darren McNees and Josh Bean have been overlooked despite compelling cases to be awarded contracts.

Rhett Lockyear, who was recruited from Sydney grade cricket two seasons ago on a two year contract, has not had his contract renewed. In two seasons of first grade cricket the 22 year old right hand top order batsman has scored 1000 runs at an average of 37.04. Rhett has excelled in one day cricket scoring 356 runs at 50.86 in Kookaburra Cup matches.

Darren McNees gained a contract last season by forcing his way into the state team but has not been awarded a contract. The 26 year old right arm medium/fast bowler took 27 wickets at 17.70 and scored 106 runs at 17.67 in T.C.A. cricket last season.

Josh Bean was the stand-out spinner in the T.C.A. competition last season and his good form was rewarded with selection in the T.C.A. Team of the Year. The 27 year old legspinner has been a consistent performer in T.C.A. grade cricket for many seasons. He has taken 111 wickets at 22.24 playing first grade cricket for University.

As a club we are confident that Rhett, Darren and Josh will continue to press for state selection and that by 'pure weight of numbers' they will gain selection in the Tigers team at some point in season 2005/2006.

The TCA announced a second round of contracts on the 8th. July which included Rhett Lockyear.

Rhett, a Senior contracted player since his move to Tasmania two years ago, has been 'downgraded' to a rookie for this coming season.
