Facelifts and New Fixtures.
Over the course of the next couple of months members can expect to see a few improvements to the facilities around the club.
Firstly, the committee has been lobbying the University for some time to assist in improving the ambience of the clubrooms. The Sports Council of the Tasmania University Union has generously given us a grant of over $10000 to paint out the clubrooms and repair, sand and varnish the floorboards in the main hall. Paul and Katie McNamara have also made a generous donation to assist with the costs associated with painting the clubrooms. We congratulate Josh Bean who has won the contract to paint the clubrooms and starts the job on Monday, 3rd October. Don't forget the club has organised a working bee at the clubrooms for Sunday, 2nd October from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. to prepare for the painting of the clubrooms. Please support the club by making an appearance at the working bee and pulling your weight!
Secondly, Asset Management Services (A.M.S) at the University of Tasmania have completed the nets project at the turf practice wickets (see the attached photos). At last we can gaurantee the safety of the tennis players below the nets and the safety of the residents in the houses close to the practice nets. We are grateful to Tom Beattie and Barry Russell at A.M.S. for their support of this project. No doubt Enrico will also be thankful as the number of lost balls should decrease dramatically. A.M.S. have also agreed to a 'test-run' a clay-base section (in the foreground of the attached photo) of the bowler's landing area of the practice wickets to see if this creates a more durable surface and leads to less holes in the bowling area.
Thirdly, Nic Hansen and Jason Britten of Total Turf Care have laser-levelled our centre square. This is the first time this has ever been done on our square and hopefully it should lead to flatter wickets and better cricket. Interestingly, the square has been formed like a rooftop so that water runs to the sides of the square rather than the ends where the bowler's run-ups can be become soggy and interrupt play. The square is sloped at 2 degrees on one side and 3 degrees on the other and the slopes meet along the edge of the two middle pitches. We thank the ground contractor and curator for their intiative on this project.
Finally, we hope to be use funds from a Sport and Recreation Tasmania grant and funds raised from the Supporter's Club to upgrade the scoreboard and the sightscreens.
We trust that members will enjoy the many improvements around the club this season.
