Tim Paine and Ben Hilfenhaus selected in a re-vamped Academy sqaud.

The TUCC are pleased to announce that two of our players, Tim Paine and Ben Hilfenhaus have been selected in a 15 member Academy training squad which will train at the new CBCA centre in Queensland from 18th. April. The eighteen week camp will include an overseas tour.

Tim was finally given a chance to prove the Tassie selectors faith over the previous seasons was correct with his maiden century in the one-day form of the game and some fine performances in the Pura Cup. Ben, dropped from the Tassie squad last season, grabbed his chance when it was given this season and has had plaudits from many with his latter season bowling performances.

Both have been touted as possible future Australian players. Maybe not until Ponting retires (you can only have one Tassie player in the Australian team?) We think there may well be three within a couple of years.

This year's selection of the Academy squad has seen a shift from promising young players who look destined for State duties to promising players who have already made their State debuts. The sqaud was, for the first time, chosen by the Australian selectors, headed by Trevor Hohns.

"With the change in selection process this year, we have chosen 15 players based on a squad-type situation which will become particularly important when the scholars embark on the international tour later in the year," Hohns said. "We have tried to select a balanced squad of players to cover all facets of the game, and within that we have selected a blend of young players, along with others who have played some first-class cricket."

We wish the two a successful and enjoyable time in sunnier climes for the next four months and trust that their return will see their appearances for the Lions next season a pleasant rareity!
