One eye on the (other) World Cup...

Matt Lister, Scott Nichols and Tom Roach have been selected in the Tasmanian team for the 2005/2006 Under 19 National Championships which will be held in Perth from the 4th to the 15th December 2005.

For Matt Lister and Scott Nichols, who are currently members of the Australian Under 19 World Cup squad, these championships represent an opportunity to ‘strut their stuff’ and gain selection in the Australian Under 19 team which will compete in the I.C.C. Under 19 World Cup in Sri Lanka in 2006.

Matt and Scott will both be competing at their second Under 19 national carnival in December and, as have Tim Paine and Gordon Kerr previously, Scott will have the opportunity to compete at his third Under 19 carnival next season.

Tom Roach, who has just completed his first year of Medicine at UTAS, narrowly missed out on selection in the team last season but was an obvious choice for the team this season. He is a raw talent and a lot of his time is taken up with his studies and soccer commitments. He recently won the Vic Tuting medal as the best player in the southern Tasmanian Premier League and was also in the Tasmanian Under 19 soccer squad. His height and high action will stand him in good stead on the bouncier Perth wickets. In the off-season he has grown taller and bulked up and his action has improved dramatically. He hits the crease harder and he gets through his action well now so that all of his momentum is directed down the wicket.

Given his raw ability it is expected that Tom will thrive under carnival conditions and will perform better the longer the carnival goes on. Tom’s batting is also a strong part of his cricket and he will be a very handy contributor with the bat at the carnival. For his height, Tom is a very nimble fieldsman and is a whole-hearted performer in the field.

We know these young men will be excellent ambassadors for Tasmania and will represent their families, the T.U.C.C. and, most importantly, themselves with distinction.

We hope that they perform to the level that they deserve to perform at throughout the duration of the carnival.
