We look forward to seeing you there
For those not able to make it to the game there will be at least one critical but honest report thereof (with pictures) added to this article shortly after the match.
Match report #1: (from Mike Gandy)
Despite inclement afternoon rain which threatened to pose the question of a Duckworth-Lewis calculation (where were you Tony Manley), a resilient batting effort by LOXI produced an authoritive win over the Uni Legends, whose attack was somewhat restricted after two of its bowlers succumbed to leg injuries while batting – an incident which saw both batsman incur injuries at opposite ends of the wicket as they succeeded to score a chancy run.
Batting first after winning the toss, the former students rattled on four-runs-per-over on an excellent strip which Glenorchy, the previous day hit up 345/6 off 50 overs. Well there were no fireworks from the vet’s blades, but Bob Cotgrove, fresh from his soujourn lecturing to Chinamen in Shanghai, was in form and there was a sign of the old magic from Richard Jackett. Mike Street was solid and with Ray Brown, who was unfortunately one of the wounded, pushed the score to a creditable 165/6. John Gunter and Paul Lovell were the pick of the Society bowlers.
A makeshift Uni new-ball attack had early success with the dismissal of skipper David Jeffrey but Geoff Clow, Paul Lovell, Mick Horlte and Andrew Gaggin (the latter three also eligible to play for the opposition) were in fine fettle and punished the loose delivery before compulsorily retiring. Newcomer James Bulter looked good in the middle-order and the target was achieved in the 32nd over. Coty and Richard Jackett’s slows suffered from a ball which resembled a cake of soap in the damp conditions and everyone was glad to retire to the clubrooms ahead of time to reflect o the day’s play.
Scores: Uni Legends 165/6 (R Jackett 37r, R Cotgrove 24, R Brown 24rh, M Street 21, Mal Brown 15, Marty Brown 13
J Gunter 2/21, P Lovell 1/10, G Clow 1/22, E Swifte 1/24, J Butler 1/31) lost to LOXI 169/2 (A Gaggin 36r, P Lovell 32r,
M Hortle 32r, G Clow 30r, J Butler 26, Marty Brown 1/11, R Cotgrove 1/33) by eight wickets.
Match report #3: (from Steve Kerr)
The covers having been removed at 8.00 am (in accordance to TCA by-law 27(5) and the wicket swept of yesterday's debris I awaited the arrival of the teams. A
glorious morning with not a cloud in the sky - it was still the same at 10.30 and no-one had arrived! Contemplating yet another memory failure a lone cricketer
appeared - sandwhiches (on delightful silver trays) in tow. Game on!
Not for the assembled teams the riguers of an hours warm-up (more later). Five minutes before the scheduled 'start of play' most had arrived at the ground in
varying states of cricket dress! Someone won the toss and the Uni. Legends were batting.
This report will not cover the actual game itself - only casual observations of the day. Firstly it should be explained to those not present that the Umpires
are those not actually batting from the batting team. They have all played at the highest level possible in their day - you'd have thought they had some idea of the
'laws of cricket'. (Cotty - a head-high 'beamer' is a no-ball - luckily not another hors-de-combat).
The teams were stacked against the Legends. How on earth the LOXI could call on such as Andrew Gaggin and the other three youngest of the Uni. guys is
beyond me. It's just not cricket!
Then again the Legends may just want to have a game and not care of the result?
Whilst the bowling actions may have been slightly dimished over the years and the 'keeping not quite as sprightly nowadays there were some glorious shots still
being played. It may have taken a few deliveries to be faced but cover drives, cuts and even pull shots were great to watch. Unfortunatey none of the current
Uni. guys were there for a lesson.
A shame the weather wasn't better later in the day but the guys played on regardless. The post-match gathering was great fun, even on low-alcohol beer which
wasn't even invented when these guys played, and the clubrooms bade farewell to the Legends for another year.
Just some epithets from the boundary:
. Upon Ray Brown's injury on running a (relatively) quick single and collapsing: (from
one of his team-mates) - "We don't need a replay - we saw it in slow motion the first time";
. Upon the next injury -"We've got a team of doctors - we need a bloody physiotherapist";
. Brian Correy - "I've done a groin - do you have any ice? - just give me a stubby and I'll use that, not draught - green";
. after the game
from someone in the throng of players - "I've done a hamstring, I'll have to miss the next game - see you in 2007".
The Uni. camera corp. arrived with flat batteries - our apologies for no pictures
Report#2 is promised from a Legends' point of view and will be included asap.
