Just some of the proposed, accepted and rejected proposals for Grade cricket next season.

Each season the Grade Cricket Committee invites submissions from Clubs and suggests changes themselves to By-Laws and playing conditions. This year's considerations were considerably less than in the past. Included below is a brief synopsis of the more important decisions taken.

Items submitted by Clubs that require further discussion before the GCC recommends to the TCA Board.

Club Championship.
Kingborough suggested that the Club Championship be weighted by varying factors depending on the Grade. - Meeting resolved that it should stay 'as is'.

Matches played in Third Grade and Under 17 to start at 11.00 am.
All agreed - so next year ALL Grade games start at the same time!

Increase the number of two day games for Under 17 and Under 15.
A North Hobart proposal that was sent back to Clubs for further discussion in relation to Under 15 only in order to keep the Under 17's in sync with senior grades.

The timing of the The Toss.
Another Kingborough suggestion that the Toss be conducted as early as 1 hour before the scheduled start of a game. Clarence moved that it should remain 'as is'. Clubs were asked to respond to amending the current Law of Cricket with the proviso that the Toss could be earlier if both Captains and the Umpires agree! A diplomatic compromise.

Change Under 17's to an open 4th. Grade.
Clarence's proposal (again). No takers so the 17's remain.

Under 15 Playing Condition - No Ball.
The current rule is that any ball pitching off the synthetic surface is immediately called a "No-Ball". The minutes suggest that the State Director of Umpiring suggested that it should be called a "Wide". Has no-one never seen such a delivery hit the surrounds and then taken out middle stump? It's still a "No-Ball" next season.

Other matters raised by the GCC or Clubs.

Covering of Wickets.
Lindisfarne suggested that wickets should be covered. Everyone agreed and, should any Club feel that their opponents haven't then the Manager Grade Cricket should be informed.

Appeals.
Not as in on the field but those of a technical variety. Nothing changes (or ever needed to?).

School Cricket v. TCA Clubs.
An old concern of the TUCC. Nowadays other Clubs are being hit by the SATIS (Sports Association of Tasmanian Independent Schools) timing of their own Finals - always on the same day as the TCA Grand Finals. The problem continues and there may be a further article on this subject at a later date.

Heritage and Rivalry Rounds.
A new concept (taken from Aussie Rules). Definately a later article on this subject.

Computers and Software Scoring.
The GCC are looking at providing 1st. and 2nd. Grade games with computer scoring software (and computers). The "pleasing concensus by Clubs" was acknowledged. The idea involves the home scorer using the software and the away scorer doing the normal book. The TCA may also pay scorers to use the software. Huge problems to overcome and there will probably be an article on this one too from our part-time scorer and webmaster!
