First Grade Captain orders Johnny G to 'lose the beard'

At last season's Presentation Dinner Johnny Gerrard experienced the full gamut of emotions. He was overjoyed when he won the Best Club Person award but our first grade captain, Tim Paine, soon brought him back to earth by ordering him to chop off his unusual beard before the start of this season.

The Conservatorium of Music student took it in his stride and has decided to raise some funds for the club by shaving off his beard. Already John's fellow students at the Conservatorium of Music have chipped in $100 and John is seeking more donations. Last week John appealed to our players at the training session at the Bellerive Indoor Centre to dig deep into their pockets to find some coins to support him.

John joined the club last season and quickly established himself as a cult figure around the club. He had an uncanny ability to continually entangle himself in the netting at the Centre and also somehow managed to run into the brick wall at the batting end! He always wore his Fitzroy beanie to training and was quite happy to spend time training with other clubs (mostly Kingborough) as well. He also counted his pre-season net wickets and told everyone who cared to listen what number he was up to. The rumour is that he scratched his number of scalps into his bed post and that the Club President had the most scratches beside his name.

During this pre-season the front page of our website will keep a tally of John's number of pre-season net wickets, his beard length (in mm) and the amount of money he has raised to have his beard shaved off.

Club President, Michael Graham-Smith will wield the razor at the Club Registration Day on Sunday, 1st October; the deed, wicket tally, amount raised and 'after' picure will be added to this article. Hopefully a tally of John's 'scalps' as well!
