Two more Uni. stalwarts recognised for their contribution to cricket.

The Tasmanian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association recently held their Annual presentaion night (and dinner) at Bellerive Oval. Two of the award winners were University's unseen and unsung stalwarts - John Barley and Penny Paterson.

John Barley has been scoring games for Uni. for many a year, ever since his son started playing in 1998. For anyone who enjoys looking at a scorebook John's have always been a delight to behold! He has never had a tube of 'white-out' in his bag of tools, doesn't mind if people have a chat during a game and can even forego a smoke if need be until drinks!

The advent of computer scoring did cause a moment of trepidation for someone who didn't know how to switch on a computer, let alone use it afterwards, but John quickly learned the art of keystrokes and embraced the new system. It did look, for a while, as though we could lose one of our best scorers but thankfully not. He managed to embrace the new scoring system (even when scoring at Pontville without power) and will hopefully continue to be a part of the Lions for many more years.

For the record John won the award as 'the most improved scorer'!

Penny Paterson is Uni.'s 1st. grade scorer and previously famous for having a heart attack during a game!

Her award was for neither of these - she is also an Umpire (and secretary of the TCUSA). Penny was awarded a certficate for Umpiring her 50th. TCA game this season. We're not sure if Penny supplies the same standard of lollies whilst standing at square leg as whilst in the scorer's box.

The TCUSA have a very good website for those that are interested in either Umpiring or scoring. It's a part of the very ordinary TCA site but don't let that deter you. Just go to the TCUSA page. It gets updated!

Our congratulations to Penny and John on their recognition to their support of cricket.
