Cricket Australia today announced the Australia A squad to compete in the Top End series, to be held in Darwin and Cairns during July. Amongst the fourteen names, most of which are bandied about as prospective Ashes squad members was a BW Hilfenhaus, better known as 'Hilfy' within the Uni. Club.

The full squad is

Cullen Bailey
Travis Birt
Mark Cosgrove
Daniel Cullen
Brett Dorey
Brad Haddin (c)
Ben Hilfenhaus
Brad Hodge (vc)
James Hopes
Phil Jaques
Mitchell Johnson
Chris Rogers
Shaun Tait
Shane Watson

The squad will play against ‘A’ teams from New Zealand, India and Pakistan in a combination of four-day, one-day and Twenty20 cricket.

Chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, said the brief of the selectors was to pick the second best side in Australia with an eye to the future.

"We see the Top End Series as a very important tournament for young, emerging talent in Australia and in particular for those pushing for Australian selection in the upcoming Champions Trophy, the Ashes and the World Cup," Hilditch said.

Hilfy will be mixing with players who have represented Australia at either Test or One Day level already and his selection is testament to his efforts since being omitted from the State squad two years ago. His performances last season for Tassie, especially in the latter half, were outstanding and his name has been mentioned as 'a bolter' for Ashes selection already.

The Club wishes Ben all the best in the series and hopes that he has the opportunity (and can take it) to show the selectors what we know he can do.

We have no doubt that Hilfy can take the next step and become the TUCC's first wearer of the covetted 'baggy green'.
