Three Lions on the Shirt.........
Our next English player is on his way to join the University Lions in pre-season training. Ned Murray, who hails from Oxfordshire, flies into Hobart on Saturday, 23rd September. Ned follows a long line of Poms who have played for our club in the past: Jack Hampshire, Roland Butcher, Simon Hinks, David Millns, George Campbell, Ben Thompson, Richard Jackson and Chris Topp to name a few!
In fact, Ned knows Ben Thompson very well. Ben was a neighbour and close family friend of Ned’s family and many years ago Ben was Ned’s babysitter! One could say their lives are very much intertwined. Ned courageously sent us the photo (left) taken at his older brother's 10th. birthday. Ben is umpiring supposedly and Ned will, by now, have grown into his pads! Like Ben, Ned plays rugby, plays for Horspath Cricket Club and captained the Magdalen College School XI and now he is coming to Tasmania to play for the University Lions.
Ned is now a right handed batsman and occasional leg break bowler. He recently completed his studies at Magdalen College School, where he was Deputy Head Boy, and captained the 1st XI cricket team in what proved to be the most successful season ever for the team. To top things off he scored a century in the final!
He has trained and played with Middlesex Under 16 and Under 17 youth teams and recently trained with the Oxfordshire Under 23 Cricket Academy and Development Squad.
Ned is treating his time in abroad as a gap year and when he returns to England he intends to read History at university. He will be living at the Jubb residence until James returns from his stint in English club cricket, and subsequent travels, just before Christmas.
With a recently completed E.C.B. Assistant Coach qualification we will use his skills in this area in our junior development programme. Ned will co-ordinate the Milo Have-A-Go programme and assist with the coaching of several junior teams including Twilight, Youth League and Girls cricket.
Ned has plans to attend the Boxing Day test match when his family fly out to visit him. Ned is fortunate that his visit coincides with an Ashes Series in Australia so while Ned wears one lion on the shirt for University he will, no doubt, be keeping a very close eye on that other team that wears three lions on the shirt!
