A balmy evening at Queenborogh and no Barmy army in sight, but why would they be there anyway? Just two very adjacent TCA clubs fighting for the honour of the loacl TCA Twenty20 crown. Uni. were the only holder of the crown (having won the very first, small, cup) and there was a way bigger version on show for the second running of the bulls! Painey managed to lose the toss again (!) so the Bay et. al. had the first hit. We had Hilfy back in the Uni. colours, Lockdog behind the stumps (at least that meant he wouldn't be bowling) and the crowd was streaming in. Sight-screens removed (well they only had one anyway) and the game was on. Bakesy opened and the scoreboard operators were in business from ball one, then two and so on. SHSB used the footy scoreboard and it read 1-0-15 after the First over. I'm not a Footy fan whatsoever (go the round ball game and Birmigham City in particular) but the first over wasn't the best? Matty Drury opened from the other end and gave away a single - great bowling. Stainless Shannon carried on bowling and the Bay et. al. continued to score. Enter Scooter for the first time! Great catch in the outer and even better clubbing footwork to stay inside the line but the square leg Ump. (from many a metre away calls a 6!). Sorry Steve - even the Bay et. al. supporters agree! The Bay rattled along (from one end) at a healthy rate but outfield catches saw three wickets fall. Sharmo replaced Matt Drury and probably wished he hadn't been asked, Beany had a good first over (and Jo a bad one) but the run rate was hauled back. Was Hilfy to bowl or had he been included as a batsman only? Over 13 and he made his appearance. We'd been watching some pretty lively bowling all afternnon but the Haus showed us what it was really all about. Even Doolan was heading away as balls whistled past his helmet. Things were kept tidy at the end, Scooter finally stayed inside the boundary and ended with three catches and the Bay et. al. were kept to a reasonable total. The Stateistically out of form Tim Paine and Graeme 'batspeed' Cunningham opened Uni's strong batting line-up and began cautiously. Richie's bat speed eluded him and he was caught at mid-off. Lockdog repeated the shot and China (Lister, not NJR who was watching from the outer) was caught at fine leg with the score at 3-45 after eight overs. The Kid was batting well by now but he needed someone to stay around. Scooter was doing the right thing and looking for singles but was run out doing just that. Tim reached his 50 off 42 balls in the 12th. over with a great flick to square hedge but things were, mathematically, getting a bit difficult for the good guys. Sharmo hung around for longer than at the bowling crease but holed out at deep mid-wicket but TD was now beginning to open up and the 100 came up in the 15th. over. Now the Bay et. al. had been taking ages to set feilds and now had 9 minutes to bowl 5 overs! Not a chance and penalties would come into play? Apparently not - shame Uni. weren't told before the game! Anyway, back to the cricket - Jacko was out for a duck, Painey started to hit balls all over the place but no-one could hang around with him. Hilfy holed out to long on and then, when Tim did likwise the game was all over. The Uni. batting card (and bowling card) tells the story. A great knock from Tim but the Bay et. al. had a more consistent approach to the game and came out deserved winners. A good crowd enjoyed a good game. Next year we'll host the Final. |
