Latest News (28th. August 2006)
More "Old Boys" news - Josh Marquet alive and well in England.
We've had a couple of emails from Josh over the last few weeks; the first (very sanitised) is reproduced in less than its entirety below:
I thought I'd seen most things on a cricket field but yetserday took the
cake. We were playing a cup semi final against our cross town rivals in a
big derby day game. There were supporters with big
plastic hands on the ground sending off batsmen. Bowlers were sending off
batsmen, umpires were nervous and the wicket was a belter. We just managed
to defend 285 and win the game.
During our time in the field our club coach bowled and was driven through cover, one of our amateur players
misfielded. The bowler shouted "****, come on", the fielder sprung up and
said "!!! ******, I didn't mean to miss it". Our Pro, fielding next
to him, says, "hey you can't speak to him like that, he deserves your
respect". The amatuer says, "*** off". These two players square up to each other
nose to nose, nearly came to blows
and had to be dragged apart.
While all this was going on the opposition was
cruising at 1 for 150, Joe Scuderi sitting nicely on 80. It was a hot day
over 30 degrees and the opposition fans were getting stuck in. Anyway
Scuderi holed out on 112, yours truly took a diving outfield catch and then
cranked up off the long run for the first time in 2 months and we won a hard
fought game.
You thinks it all over. Sit down with a beer. The Coach anounces that
he will no longer play for this club and is off. Pro says we
deserve more respect and says he's going and another
player whom I open the bowling looks like he'll be off too. When
we walked off the ground we were 2 games clear at the top of the league and
in two cup finals. And, finally, the Pro goes for a shower and the amateur is in there. The Pro
tells the amateur he's leaving unless he gets an apology. The amateur puts his
hand out and says "I wish you all the best for the future"!
Anyway we may be looking for a Pro for the next 2 months, if you know of any
good batters that might like a trip to Clitheroe, run it by them.
Cheers, all the best Josh
(Our apologies for any offense caused by so many asterisks and so on but the alternative was worse.)
The second email contained only a couple of pictures. Whilst in England Josh has been making the odd appearance for the MCC, who play several games
(often on the same day!) against Clubs, social teams, serious teams - in fact it appears against anyone who wants a game of cricket!
The team photo below is of the game between the MCC and Ireland, which gave Josh a chance to return to Lords and actually play there.
As in the previous picture we published of Josh at Lords (as a spectator) it should be noted that he still proudly wears the University vest!
The MCC have an interesting website which lists, amongst other things, a complete itinerary of their games around the U.K.
For the record Ireland won quite easily; the score card below:
