Under 17 Coach's Report
It was a pleasure to coach the Under 17 guys again. I really appreciated the way the guys got along with one another given the strong and different personalities that existed in the team.
Even though it was not the most successful year for us the enthusiasm was always there. At times I thought some players doubted their abilities but I always encouraged them to back themselves and give it their best shot.
After the winter break the season started with a ripper of a game against Kingborough where we played a natural game. The game had all the supporters on edge up until the last ball. Judging from this match there was a definite belief that we had the goods to certainly give the finals another shot even though we went down by three runs
We lost the next couple of matches and I noticed a change with the way we approached our cricket. I am a strong believer in self belief and as a coach I personally like to be on the attack looking for a win without being scared to sacrifice a win in order to go for the win. However, our style of play didn't match that.
We retained many of our players from the previous season and gained some new recruits at the start of the season and throughout the season. To the credit of the boys, we never stopped trying and there was always a chance that, if a couple of games could go our way, we would be back in the hunt for a finals spot.
As the season progressed further our finals hopes were beginning to fade as we slipped closer to the wrong end of the ladder. I felt sorry for Tom Ritchie as captain as this was his season to lead the guys into battle. Tom did a great job as captain. He had the respect of all the team and never shied away from a tough position.
By the time the season was drawing to an end we were battling to hold onto second last spot on the ladder. We managed to hold our spot with a close win over New Town.
Even though there were more losses than wins we had a great time with plenty of good banter. There is still plenty of talent in the side to take it to the next level next season.
I would like to end by thanking the T.U.C.C. for their support over the season and by thanking the U17 guys who made it a very enjoyable season.
Many kind regards
JOHN PERRY
