Rhett Lockyear stars in the field for the Aussies.

Universty's Rhett Lockyear made quite a name for himself over the last three days. Whilst playing for Tassie's 2nd XI last week he was asked if he'd like to be the Aussies 12th. man (when the real 12th. man, Uni.'s Ben Hilfenhaus went off to play for the State team). No problem said Rhett.

Little did he know that Andrew Symonds would twist his ankle batting which meant that Rhett ended up fielding for both of Sri Lanka's innings. During the fist innings the ball seemed to follw Rhett and he started to get a bit of media coverage, increasing when he effected a run out! The second innings was even better! A catch at point for Australia's first wicket and another run out!

It should also be pointed out that Tim Paine was acting 13th. man and also had a fair bit of time on the ground. Not bad - two Uni. guys playing for Australia!

Below are some quotes from Baggygreen's text broadcast of the second innings - enjoy.

Andrew Symonds is still not on the field. Rhett Lockyear substituting for him.

Johnson to Vandort, OUT, that's a brute of a bouncer and gets his man, 145kph, short and just outside off, Vandort not sure what to do with it and goes for a half-hearted pull, the bottom hand comes off the bat and he ends up one-handed, scooping the ball straight to point, fantastic ball from Johnson, first blood

Lot of emails about Symonds. He injured himself while batting on the second day and hasn't been on the field since. Lockyear has been on since then. I don't know the reason why he doesn't wear a hat.

Justin wants to know: "Could anyone please tell me where Rhett Lockyear comes from (other than the obligatory Tasmania!)?"

Steve repsonds: "Rhett Lockyear moved to Tassie from NSW a few years ago. Plays for the University CC in Hobart."

The general consensus is that Lockyear can't wear the baggy green because he isn't a Test player yet and simply chooses not to wear a floppy hat. Logical alright

Jason: "Is Australia employing the same tactics now that they accussed England of in the Ashes a few years back - ie. selecting a gun fielder (ie. Rhett Lockyear )as the 12th man rather than the bloke that just missed out on a game ?" (He's talking about Hilfenhaus here and not Symonds)

Chris responds: "I believe Australia's 12th man isnt in the field because he has flown out to play for Tasmania, Symonds is clearly being rested to prevent further damage to his ankle...so i cant see how they could be the same tactics."

We're back for the second session. Lots of mails about Lockyear and the use of substitute fielders during the break. Now that apart a few ladies have been writing in saying all this arguement is irrelevent since Lockyear is one of the hottest cricketers they've seen in a while. Stats enthusiasts want to know Lockyear's performance (one catch and one run-out) compared to other subs.

Should Lockyear get the baggy green? England and other countries allow the subs to use the national caps. I think not

Nick writes in: "He should stick with the floppy. England dont value their caps the same as what australia do. Lockyear would not want the baggy green (im guessing). Perhaps england shouldn't be handing out their national cap like they were on sale."

Clark to Fernando, 2 runs, OUT, Would you believe it? Now there is a run out. SL are slipping rapidly out of the radar. The substitute Lockyear joins in the fun. Full pitched, on the middle and leg and driven through midwicket. Fernando turns for the third run, Lockyear swoops on the ball, swivels around and fires in a flat, fast and a accurate throw. Lee is waiting there, the ball is in his right hand and he breaks the stumps. Did he break the stumps with the left hand first? Or did he manage to do it correctly. Close. Perhaps it could have been refered upstairs. May be, the ump never had any doubt in first place.

On top of all of this Rhett also featured on the "Cricket Show". The clip can be seen on-line here.

At the end of the game Rhett was given one of the stumps and a match ball. And a beer or two?

Nice one Lockdog!
