Report (by Michael Graham-Smith)

(DAY 1). Due to pitches not being able to be prepared the first day of all TCA First Grade games were cancelled. This game was played on 25th. October only.

(DAY 2).
Under threatening skies the season got underway on time for the first grade team at Bellerive Oval.

Skipper Thomas won the toss and decided to bat. Clarence had an experienced new ball attack in Denton and Colegrave and, as expected, the pitch gave them good assistance early in the match.

Lurch went early adjudged LBW and debutant Lockyear joined 'partner in crime' Paine at the crease. The two of them played straight and were able to survive the rest of the morning session. Lockyear unleashed one horizontal bat shot that shook the cover boundary fence - a memorable shot. Their confidence grew the longer they remained at the crease and at lunch they looked set to capitalise in the afternoon session.

Alas, Paine was out shortly after lunch having played a good innings for an opener by batting through the morning session. Cunningham joined Lockyear at the crease and the next hour produced exciting strokeplay by both batsmen. Lockyear passed 50 runs and the University faithful celebrated in the crowd.

'Richie' soon reached his half-century (58 balls) and the Uni. crowd were cheering again. This combination were treating the bowling with disdain and it took a waist high full toss from Stirling to break the combination. Lockyear was caught at mid off for a well-compiled 73 runs and he looks set for plenty more this season.

University lost a few quick wickets in the second hour of the middle session. Cunningham was dismissed for 62 runs, the skipper went early and Kingo gave his wicket away just before tea. Considering that Kingo had faced a grand total of 17 balls during his one practice session for pre-season training he was looking in quite good touch.

This brought Scooter to the wicket for his first hit in first grade cricket. He saw off 3 balls from Denton and the tea break was taken.

With the skies becoming increasingly overcast the skipper decided to bat on after tea. The run rate had been quite healthy all day and an attempt to bowl Clarence out after tea came into calculations but the gloomy skies were going to put an end to it all anyway.' Let's rest the bowlers for another week', the skipper told the team at the tea break.

Scooter looked at home during his stay at the wicket and Ancs played some good shots in his score of 20 runs. The others came and went and Uni. were bowled out for 215 runs. It looked like Uni. would have to bowl anyway but the skies opened up, the new curator at Bellerive became a bit anxious about the surrounds, everyone shook hands and went home.

'Game on' against the arch-enemy next week.
