Report (by Rod Purves)
(DAY 1). Due to ground conditions the first day of this game was cancelled. This game was played on 26th.
October only.
(DAY 2). The first game of the season for the 3rds ended up being a frustrating one
of ifs, buts, and almosts as it ended in a very close draw.
Having had the first day washed out, the plan was to hopefully bowl first
and knock Clarence over for as little as possible, then chase down the runs
in quick time. All started well with Uni winning the toss and electing to
bowl. The Clarence openers saw off the opening bowlers of Tom Roach and
Rod Purves, as some good bowling was bought undone with inconsistent lines,
and the ball being hit in the air just wide/high of fielders on a
frustratingly consistent basis. Spin was introduced early, with new
recruit Heath Barwin being brought on in the 12th over.
At drinks Clarence had progressed to 0/55 off 19 overs, but in the first
over after the break Heath struck, and he soon collected another 2 wickets,
to take his figures to 3/37. After a solid and economical bowling spell
from Tiernan O'Rourke, and with the Roos not playing spin at all well, Sam
Lambert was introduced into the attack, and he tore through the middle
order.
Controlled flight, consistent lines, and the odd 'Jubby' full toss
resulted in the outstanding figures of 5/15. With the pressure to clean up
the tail, Rod Purves came back into the attack and collected the last
couple to end with 2/16, and Clarence were all bowled out for 125.
The run chase started solidly with Ronan Fenton and Ben Hickey opening the
batting. A minimum of 23 overs meant a scoring rate of about 5.5 per over
was required, and the openers put on 33 until Ben was dismissed with the
first ball of the 10th over for 15. Enter Tim Steven at number 3, who
showed everyone how to build an innings under pressure, as he showed some
early caution before playing some outstanding shots. The partnership
between Fenton and Steven took the score to 78, before Ronan was dismissed
for 27. This left us requiring 48 runs to score in 20 minutes. Chris
Hevey (2) failed to make an impact at number 4, being in the unfortunate
position of having to slog from ball 1. His demise left us at 3/89, with
37 runs still needed. Heath Barwin was elevated to number 5, and he soon
hit 3 consecutive 4's to lift the chances. Throughout this time, Tim had
been batting well, and his pull shot for 6 was by far the shot of the day.
13 runs were required off the last over to win, with it coming down to 5
off the last ball. Tim Steven was facing, and unfortunately was stumped,
ending his knock of 45 and resulting in a draw with Uni 4/121.
The fact that we managed to almost win a 2 day game in 1 day showed that
Uni are going to be a serious threat to all sides this year, and with all
but 1 games on turf for the rest of the year we hope to show the rest of
the competition what the Lions spirit is all about.
