(DAY 1). Having won the toss, Brad invited the Glenorchy team to have first use of a pitch that resembled a fifth day SGG strip more than a well prepared TCA first day wicket. Tony Greig may well have lost his car in some of the cracks (especially at the Northen end) let alone his keys. From ball 1 of the game it was apparent that there would be some 'movement' off the seam and even more off the pitch. It was a day for playing straight. Lurch was the first to depart, trying to paly a ball to leg and gaining a leading edge. Rhett and Tim slowly compliled a useful partnership before an attempted quick single and a direct hit from backward point saw Rhett's unfortunate departure with the score on 47. Richie and Tim scratched another 26 runs (courtesy of a myriad of Pickering's no-balls) before Richie had an unplayable cutter and was caught behind. Skipper Brad attempted a leg glide and was caught at point (departing after a long look at the minefield), Jacko went in similar fashion soon afterwards and Tim, after a careful innings, became the first victim at the southern end! Smithy and China put on some valuable runs before China was run out at the non-striker's end off the boot of the bowler in his follow-through following a glorious straight drive from the Cowboy. Heath and X frustrated the Glenorchy side for a further 33 runs (whilst the temperature in the middle rose somewhat) before Smithy became the third batsman to fail to play straight and was caught in the covers. Beany came, looked good for a couple of balls and went, Heath got another cutter and was caught behind and the Uni. innings closed at, considering the strip, a very respectable 185. Taking into account Glenorchy's slow over rate, Uni had 22 overs to utilise the same strip before stumps. Hilfy opened from the southern (or preferred from a bowling viewpoint) end and had Birt and Butterworth playing and missing every other ball. Gordy had the un-preferred end but, after a six from the charging Butterworth got an edge to a wide ball and gained Uni.'s first wicket. Hilf then had the out-of-sorts Birt LBW and another wicket next ball - the ball stopping in a cavern and popping stright back for a caught and bowled (allowing Hilfy to demonstrste his marking skills to those AFL talent scouts at the ground). Unfortunately Glenorchy's Dilger and Mustard hadn't been watching the day's play and proceeded to plunder the Uni. attack for the last eight overs, adding 44, leaving the game in the balance. For the record: of the 13 wickets that fell on the day 2 were run out and 8 were taken by bowlers from the southern end of the ground. Prior to the covers being put in place at the end of the day the Glenorchy capatain was seen taking pictures of the wicket! For the second game in succession it may well be that there is no further play (again according to the weather bureau) but they're always wrong. (DAY 2). Match abandoned due to rain. |
