Report (by Rod Purves)
(DAY 1) Round 10 saw the clash of 3 v 4 on the third grade ladder, with Uni keen to
get back on the winners list after a disappointing game against
Kingborough.
A pre-game inspection of the pitch saw us staring a the surface of the moon
- cracks and craters everywhere. Not what we expected to see, but the KGV
pitch is always a bit different to others around the place.
Upon 12:30 Rocket summoned the umpires and wandered over to the opposing
captain for the toss, and once again called correctly. The decision of bat
vs ball was a tough one, but with the desire to go for maximum points in
the game the decision to bowl was made, even though it was the least popular
choice among teammates.
We welcomed Matt Green to the club for his first game, and it wasn't long
before he was in the action.
The "sultans of swing "were back together
doing what they do best - bowling tightly and using the conditions to their
advantage - and Rocket had his 1st scalp in the 5th over of the day,
courtesy of a screamer of a catch at square leg from Greeny, who was caught
wrong-footed walking in and had to throw himself backwards in the air to
take the catch one-handed.
In his next over Rocket (2/39) had victim number 2, as a simple catch was
spooned to Bolts at mid off, and the Magpies were choking like their AFL
namesake at 2/13 in the 7th. However, their number 4 batsman took the
'Babe Ruth' approach to batting and swung hard at everything, and the
scoring rate soon climbed.
A 50 run partnership was soon undone by a tremendously thought out field
placing by Bolts, with Stuey (1/37) finding the edge of the hard swinging
batter and the catch being taken nicely at fly slip by Greeny. Huey Lewis
(1/18) delivered some good news in the very next over, with Bolts taking
another solid catch, and Glenorchy had slipped to 4/63 in the 17th.
The introduction of spin proved to be a good decision, as Huddo bowled 2
maidens before striking with the 1st ball of his 3rd over. A devastating
delivery had the batsman scared and he soon departed after having trodden
on his stumps, much to the amusement of the Lions.
The tight bowling continued, and Huddo (3/21) soon had victims 2 and 3,
courtesy of a catch by Streety and a generous LBW decision (no arguments
from us though, and bugger the spirit of cricket!). Glenorchy were reeling
at 7/89, and the Uni boys were after the kill. The sultans of swing
renewed their partnership and bowled tightly, but failed to do any further
damage, so spin was reintroduced.
Huddo again bowled tightly, but it was Gibbsy (2/10) who knocked off the
tail courtesy of a catch from Stevo and a caught & bowled. These 2 wickets
were separated by a brilliant run out at the bowlers end from a direct hit
by Tiernan O'Rourke at square leg, and Glenorchy had been bundled out for
133. A fine display of tight bowling, and the fielding was flawless for
the first time this year.
Due to his dogged resistence in prior games Streety was promoted to open
the innings with Hicks, and a minimum of 12 overs had to be faced.
Emphasis was on protection of wickets rather than runs, and the openers
managed to do this exceptionally well under tough batting conditions, as 6
of the first 9 overs were maidens.
Unfortunately for us Glenorchy bowled their overs at a good rate, which
meant more opportunities for them to take wickets. In the 15th over Hicks
was out stumped with the score on 26, and Huddo had to go in to bat for
about 15 minutes. From ball 1 he looked like a player in form, as he cover
drove his first ball for 4. Streety continued to show his fighting
qualities, and these 2 carried us into the last over of the day
comfortably.
However on the 2nd last ball of the over Huddo tried to go over the top,
only succeeding to sky a catch that was comfortably taken at mid on to be
dismissed for 18. Thankfully the umpires called an end to the days play,
so Stevo didn't have the unenviable job of facing just 1 ball, and Uni
ended the day at 2/51 off 19.5.
(DAY 2). Match abandoned due to rain.
