(DAY 1). The Scobbies met North Hobart at Fergusson Park on Saturday on a green, dicey looking strip. An important toss was won and a weak opposition batting side was put in first. Immediately, the pitch favoured us and together with some accurate bowling and tight fielding, the Demons' lineup began to crumble. The pick of the bowlers were Michael Hollingsworth with 4 wickets and Kieron Mulcahy who bowled his heart out for 2 wickets. With no-one making it past twenty, the Uni boys were set the mere total of 73 to win. Aware of how valuable an outright win would be at this stage of the season, everyone was keen to go out and set a big total - despite the pitch still showing bite. Problems hit the Uni camp early, with Nick Grubb being fired LBW for a duck. Josh Lambert followed Grubb's path to the change rooms after being run out. Paul Ancher struggled to get comfortable and departed after having his stumps rattled. Meanwhile, opener Andy Matthews survived and became the first player in the match to make it past 20. Both Andy and Nathan started to build a partnership, but it didn't sustain - Matthews became North Hobart's 4 victim. A nervous James G. Kingston stepped up and somehow managed to see out a fantastic spell from comeback bowler, John Pregnall. His replacement, Nick Guinane, proved his worth almost straight away by catching Winter off his own bowling. Uni were 5 wickets down and still roughly 20 runs were needed to ensure first innings points. The excitement continued when a few balls later, skipper Michael Hollingsworth was controversially given out caught behind. Both Kingston and the skipper stood stunned as the demons celebrated another wicket. Fingers are crossed Kingston isn't reported for asking the umpire responsible if he was standing the right way round when the decision was made. This brought the talented Paul Hudson to the crease (batting at 8!). With a few runs still to get, both Kingston and Hudson sheepishly crept closer to the mark. Hudson managed to relieve the whole Uni camp when he hit a rank full toss from the erratic Guinane through the covers for four, which sealed first innings points. The Scobbies hope to find a more favourable deck waiting for them next week so a few more runs can be put on the board. An outright victory is still very much on the cards, which will have the boys back in business. |
