For the 6th time this season the Uni 3rds packed up the camping gear and made the long trip up to Pontville to take on Lindisfarne. This game had significant importance as the Farnies were 2 points ahead of us, so a top 2 spot was up for grabs. The team assembled at the ground (except Gibbsy who was late as usual) to hear of the carnage from the day before, when only 135 runs were scored on the ground, and 1 team having been bowled out for 31. For the first time in a while the decision was unanimous - win the toss and bowl. Rod 'Sourav Ganguly' Purves tossed the coin and the opposing captain got the call wrong - another win for Rocket! The decision to bowl was duly made, and the Uni camp was feeling pretty good. Rocket put all players on notice that they could be required to bowl, as we were missing Stuey A and Greeny. Rocket took the first over as normal and success was found with the very first ball, as the batsman played around an outswinging yorker to have the woodwork damaged. 1/0 of 1 ball - you beauty! Some good bowling from Rocket and Huey Lewis, given the new ball in Stueys absence, kept things reasonably tight, as the batsman played and missed and edged to our frustration. Huey struck in the 6th over with a ball that stayed down a little bit, and the timber was again in need of straightening up. 2/19 off 6. Soon after, a Farnies batsman tried to hit the ball off the square deliberately, only to find the safe hands of a diving Gibbsy at square leg, giving Huey his second scalp. In the very next over Rocket found an edge that was greatly accepted by Girth in the gully, and Farnies were reeling at 4/21 off 9. Huey (2/13 off 6) and Rocket (2/20 off 8) were replaced in the attack by China (aka Lizzie McGuire) and Gibbsy, who continued with the tight bowling, with China picking up a wicket. Lindisfarne consolidated either side of the drinks break, so it was time to introduce our strike bowler - Girth. He didn't disappoint, as he picked up 2 wickets in his second over and kept things tight. With the lack of seam bowlers Rocket had to dive deep into his book of tricks, and he produced the wildcard of 'Dizzy' Naidoo, who stood up and, although struggled a bit with his line, took 2 quick wickets, as he and Girth (3/16) wrapped up the tail. All out for 97, a good performance that could have been better if we hadn't bowled 19 wides! Mac Daddy and the Street kid opened up, and saw us safely through to the 5 ths over, when Streety drove a ball straight to mid off. In the next over Scooter pulled a ball straight to mid wicket, and the following over saw Mac Daddy flash at a wide ball and get caught at fly slip. 3/13 off 7. Not good, but no need to panic just yet, 2 overs later though, Lizzie McGuire was out lbw, and we were struggling at 4/17 off 9. Kerry and Dizzy then produced a solid partnership to see us gain some momentum again, with Kerry hitting 3 magnificent sixes. Unfortunately, he was undone by some good off spin bowling and out for 31, leaving us at 5/48. Hicks, coming in at number 7 rather than opening, looked comfortable at the crease against the slower bowling, and he and Shiv took us to 62 before Shiv skied a short ball. Rocket entered the arena next, but was out with score on 71. The worlds unluckiest man, Gibbsy, made his appearance at the crease, but it was short lived as he was given out lbw to a spinning delivery that he had stepped well forward to. Hicks and Girth seemed comfortable at the crease, but with the score on 89 Hicks was bowled by the opening bowler who had made his return. 9 runs to get, and Lindisfarne slow with their over rate - it was going to be a close finish. Unfortunately, it wasn't close enough, as Girth had a bail clipped with the score on 94, and it was all over, as we went down by 3 runs. Our fielding for the day was very good, and bowlers were good in not bowling short. However 19 wides cost us dearly, and poor shot selection was an issue when batting and resulted in giving away a few wickets. The last 2 games will be crucial to us, and as we should be at full strength with Stuey and Greeny to return, there should be no excuses for not entering the finals on the back of 2 wins. |
