(DAY 1). On the last day of summer, the Uni 3rds made the short trip to New Town Oval to take on the Bucks. After the disappointment of last round the Lions were out to redeem themselves and get some form back heading into the penultimate round. Unfortunately the weather was far from being like summer, and while the Uni boys were inspecting the pitch a shower of rain came. The Bucks decided their clubrooms were nice and comfortable, and continued to play cards while the Lions (with the help of Pete Nichols) covered their pitch! No need to thank us New Town, it's fine...... really.......... The toss took place on time and Rod "Sourav Ganguly" Purves was correct with the call once again, and decided to bat in the inclement conditions. The rain soon cleared though, and play started only 10 minutes late. Mac Daddy and the Street kid opened up, but the partnership came to an end in the 4th over when Streety's castle was damaged by an off cutter. 1/8. Scooter entered the fray at number 3 and played very cautiously early, much to the joy of the skipper who enjoyed seeing him place so much value on his wicket. Meanwhile Mac Daddy showed the young guys at the club some of his trademark strokeplay, last seen on this oval during his epic 94 in a stand of 160 with Heath Chick in the 97/98 season, and these two built a strong partnership at a rate of 3 per over. At drinks we were 1/52 off 17 and looking much better than the previous week. The scoring continued at a steady rate after drinks, and Scooter started playing some well timed shots through point and gully. Mac Daddy reached his 2nd. half century of the season, and the score was carried past 100. With the score on 113, Mac Daddy didn't quite get on to a backfoot drive from the bowling of 'Dr Evil', and was out for 73. A fine partnership for the 2nd wicket of 105 in 33 overs. Shiv strode to the crease, but was out 4 runs later after being bowled by the Dr, and only 3 runs after that Scooter was out lbw to the same bowler for a well made 38. 4/120 after being 1/113 - not what we were looking for. To make things even worse, Matt 'The Fugitive' Green had to retire with the score on 125 with what appeared to be a dislocated shoulder. Hicks joined Lizze McGuire at the crease and these 2 carried the score to 149, when they tried to take a 3rd run and the left arm powder puff underarm throw (really, you should have seen it!) somehow managed to beat Lizzie to the stumps, and he was run out for 17. Rocket joined Hicks at the crease and they were determined to stop the flow of wickets. It wasn't long though until they started to push the run rate along with a series of square cuts, pulls, and leg glances, with the odd well taken quick single thrown in to keep the Townies on the back foot. As the score passed 200 the skippers brain ticked over at a rate of knots - when should we declare? how many runs is enough? how long do we want at them tonight? With the score on 223 Rocket's brain was still ticking, but it was ticking back in the changerooms after a skied pull shot was taken at square leg, and he was out for 36, having helped put on 74 with Hicks in 16 overs. Gibbsy had a brief stint in the middle but was bowled for 6 with the score on 243. Rocket gave Hicks the chance to get his 50, but he was out for 47 3 runs later, so the declaration was made with the score at 7/246. With about 20 minutes left the Lions were pumped to take a quick wicket or two. Unfortunately the Bucks weren't in the same mood, and there were no scorers ready at the start of their innings, so minutes delay occurred. The Sultans of Swing were back in action, and the Bucks batsmen were soon playing and missing, and edging through slips/gully when really lucky! With the score on 8, Rocket resisted the input of his team mates to move Streety from square leg to a 2nd gully, and success was found the next ball, as the batsman flicked a ball from Rocket into Streety's waiting hands - brilliant captaincy! (a crap ball, but brilliant captaincy!)......... Not much happened in the next 3 overs, except for more playing and missing and edging by the batsman, as they limped to 1/21 at stumps. To be continued next week............ (DAY 2). No play - match abandoned. |
