Report (by Mike Graham-Smith)

The Uni boys saddled up and took the long ride down the Southern outlet to the home of the archenemy - The Knights.

As we drove into the ground our attention was immediately drawn to the pitch prepared for this match. 'Rolled Mud', 'dirt track' and 'strangely brown' were some of the phrases muttered by the boys as we gazed at the wicket. What to do if we win the toss?

Luckily, the skipper lost the toss and Stuart Clark snr. had no hesitation in throwing us in the mud. Painey and Lurch strode to the wicket confidently but Painey was soon put to the sword. Lurch and Rhett formed a handy partnership and at 1 for 64 everything seemed to be going along swimmingly.

However, a few overs later Lurch, Scarlet, Richie and BJ were all back in the hutch and we were precariously positioned at 5 for 77 with plenty of overs left. On a positive note, Jacko was starting to find some fluency in his batting and dispatched a few juicy full tosses lobbed up on leg stump from Diva.

Ancs was given out caught behind shortly afterwards and his lingering presence at the wicket after the umpire's finger was raised drew many 'minus 1' comments from the boys freezing in the wind tunnel near the clubrooms.

6 for 92 with a multitude of overs remaining…..

Scooter strode to the wicket and was promptly hit on the head. Brad ran onto the ground to revive him, comfort him and point him in the right direction. The knock seemed to strengthen his resolve. Scooter played the perfect support role while Jacko hit the bowling to all parts of the Kingston Beach Oval. Jacko and Scooter put on a valuable partnership of 28 runs. Hilfy and Jacko put on 20 runs together and Gordy and Beany played vital cameos at the end.

All out for 164 with an over remaining. Was it enough?

Diva came out to open the innings. That hasn't happened for 7 or 8 years against us. Coincidence? Anyway, he came out swinging and Hilfy soon had him caught by the skipper.

1 for 7 became 2 for 7. Hilfy and K were bowling tight lines and giving little away.

2 for 7 became 4 for 29. 'Smokey' Dawson was trying to ignite something. The skipper introduced himself into the attack and quickly knocked over 'Smokey' and 'The Cod'.

4 for 29 became 6 for 43 and the writing was on the wall. Ancs was introduced into the attack (much to his own delight) and soon tied the Ribbon in a Knott. Gordy bowled perfect line and length in his spell but was not rewarded with a wicket. The Bean flicker chimed in with a couple to finish off the Knights.

Once again, the Uni boys showed a lot of ticker by getting out of a sticky batting situation and the bowling proved to be a real team effort. Jacko threw himself around in the field and amazed everyone with his speed to the ball and quick release.

Our unbeaten record in the Kookaburra Cup against the Knights remains in tact. Since the statewide Kookaburra Cup competition was introduced in 1986/87 we have played Kingborough 7 times for 6 wins and one abandoned game. Long live the Lion Kings….
