Report (by Michael Hollingsworth)

Pre-Game

For the second weekend in a row the Uni scoobies gathered at their home ground in eager anticipation of their first one day game of the season.
The day was kicked off with a warm-up and the toss of the coin which as luck would have it fell our way again and as the previous week we elected to take to the crease and attempt to improve on last weeks promising start to the season.

Game

Openers Nick Grubb and Andy Matthews again strode to the crease hoping to get their side off to a solid start. This however was not to be with the early loss of Andy which bought 2nd grade new comer Tim Stevens from the sheds after a solid contribution with the bat in third grade last week. Both Nick and Tim looked solid but were dismissed in close time bringing to the wicket 'Jubby' and 'Huddo'. After spanking two loose deliveries to the boundary Huddo was well caught at cover.
With the innings looking slightly shaky Jubby and Matty Lister combined for an excellent partnership which set the side for a swashbuckling final ten overs. With Jubby being dismissed for a well made 27 new comer Heath Barwin and Matty Lister set about spreading the field with some lusty hitting. Both combined to set what would prove to be match winning total with Matty lister being caught three runs short of his fifty and Heath being dismissed with a very well made 32 from 25 deliveries.
The biggest disappointment for the day with the bat was Sammy Perkins who at number 11 made a solid 1 not out and felt that it was a hundred gone begging!!

After setting a total of 181 the boys were pumped to take to the field for the first time this summer. Sam Perkins soon turned his disappointment with the bat around with an excellent display of quick and accurate bowling snaring two early wickets.
From the other end the 'make shift' captain, Mick Hollingsworth took the new ball as he well knew it may be his only opportunity to do so this season!! He was lucky to bring about a couple of loose shots which put the side into a commanding position with Kinborough crumbling to be 4-16 after eight overs.
As the first bowling change was made, Matty Lister took the ball which bought about immediate dividends snaring a wicket with his fourth ball. Heath Barwin proved that he will be a real asset to the club this time taking the ball and proving to be more than a handful for the Kinborough batsmen taking 2-20 of his ten overs. This included what has already been nominated for classic catch of the season which Heath produce an outside edge which was brilliantly taken by a diving Huddo at first slip.
Huddo then followed up the catch with a very tidy 3-12 of 3.4 overs taking the final wicket of the day to end Kinboroughs innings on 140.

Post Game

After congratulations all round the lads adjourned to the change rooms for a rousing rendition of the clubs very famous song. It would of course been more arousing had more people other than the teams Captain (yes he did decide to grace us with his presence after spending a very intense, draining day drinking and eating in a corporate box at the Tassie game at Bellerive Oval!!) and President had any idea of the words to the song and even perhaps some inclination as to how the tune went! Kingo has assured us that he will rectify this problem so the song can be sung loud by all following (hopefully) our next win over Glenorchy.
Following the singing of the song I have not felt quite so old for some time until Stan bought in a box (which some of us for a fleeting second thought may have been a nice cold beer) to find it full of Fanta, Coke and Lift which was greeted by loud cheers of excitement from nearly all present!!
The day was capped of nicely with a nice quite evening consisting of a BBQ a few beers (for those two of us old enough!!) and the odd bomb blast from out on the oval. Stan was last seen battening down the hatches and at a full sprint fleeing for his car…….he has not been sighted since!!
Again, congratulations to the boys for an excellent start to the season and heres hoping that we can continue on and get stronger every game.
