Report

The Uni 3rds played their first game of the season on home soil on sunday, and with the good performance against Clarence the week before it was expected to be a good display of one day cricket. Resplendent in our one day uniforms, we took to the field first to see if we could put early pressure on Kingborough.

Unfortunately we looked a lot better than we bowled, as one of the 'Boroughs openers 'teed off' against us and smashed a century. We did have our chances though, with an lbw decision dubiously turned down against him, as well as dropping him twice. Tom Roach also had the misfortune of bowling the other opener twice in the same over off no-balls.

With medium pace not working we turned to spin. Sam Lambert was unlucky to have the century maker dropped off his first ball. Just before drinks Andrew Kerr was introduced into the attack, courtesy of some advice from Heve Dog, and soon after the break we had our first wicket with the score on about 135. A few overs later Kerry claimed his 2nd wicket, and ended up bowling out his spell to take 2/26 off 8.

Behind in our over rate, and hoping to force some quick wickets, Ben Hickey was thrown the ball in the 27th over. His slow-medium sliders, very under-rated by some, proved to be the remedy we needed earlier in the day, as he cut a swathe through the middle order to take 4/35 off 7, including a memorable hat-trick. His guile, swing and cut proved to be too much for the inexperienced batsman, and his performance is likely to see him thrown the ball earlier from now on.

Eventually Kingborough finished 6/231, and some sucking up by the captain saw no penalties applied for a slow over rate.

Unfortunately we were unable to bat the full 40 overs out anyway, as our side faltered in the chase and we were bundled out for 90. Hicks was also our best with the bat, top scoring with 18, with Ben Sims and Andrew Kerr the only other players to make double figures. Extras tried his best too, with a solid 17.

Quote of the day has to go to myself, as i told the team "we have to make sure we bat our full 40 overs out", and then proceeded to cut my first ball straight to point. D'oh!

Apart from the hat-trick, there wasn't much to take out of the game. It did however highlight our deficiencies in bowling consistent lines and valuing our wickets, so a better performance on the training track is expected over the next few weeks to help us gain our first points of the season.
