Report (by Mike Graham-Smith)

University was at the Lions' Den for the first time this season. Stubbsy had written us off but he obviously hadn't done his homework. Our record at home, coupled with the fact that this was also a Kookaburra Cup match, had to give us the edge in this match.
We wanted to bat but the skipper lost the toss. "A good toss to lose", the skipper said as he walked back to the group. Venus had decided to bat so we were in the field with more than enough cloud cover to give the bowlers some assistance early. "The skies will be blue when we bat", the skipper assured everyone as the group sauntered back to the dugout.
Hilfy took the new (albino) cherry and Umpire Kenny G. got the match underway. Second ball of the innings, Hilfy hurled down the straight half-volley we were looking for (not) and 'Ernie' obliged by snicking it to 'keeper Paine.
1 for 0…..off we go!
Soon afterwards K picked up the wicket of Geeves. 2 for a handful…..you beauty!
This brought Dilger and Butterworth together and from the start they rode their luck and got away with it. After a dozen overs the run rate was sitting at 6 runs per over and we were staring down the barrel.
The introduction of Bean and Thomas to the bowling crease slowed the run rate. Dilger looked good for his first fifty and then forgot how to bat. The skipper threw Scooter the ball and what an inspired piece of captaincy it turned out to be. Scooter returned the figures of 6 overs, 2 for 14 and picked up the vital wickets of the run makers, Dilger and Butterworth.
At this stage the captain, obviously under the influence of performance-enhancing drugs, started throwing himself around in the field like a madman. He dived full-length onto a well hit punch through mid-wicket and, whilst falling to the ground flicked the ball behind him, without looking, straight to Painey with the batsman stranded mid-pitch. When he fielded well a second time and threw to the fieldsman at the stumps for a second run out he was belying his age. However, when he made good ground to a ball at short mid wicket and threw down the stumps, for a third run out, it was all too much for the Uni faithful. The crowd went berserk.
After the early onslaught the Lions had restricted Glenorchy to 9 for 178. "A good comeback - a well-measured response should get us home", the skipper told the boys back in the change rooms.

The Uni innings started in a steady fashion. Painey and Lurch saw off the new ball attack well. Just before drinks Lurch launched a fearsome attack on the bowling. He opened his shoulders and hit savagely down the ground. He clipped one over square leg for a 'boundary sixer' and he had his eye in. However, right on drinks he was dismissed for a well-compiled 42 runs. Rhett was out shortly after drinks but Painey and Richie set about building a patnership. With 2 wickets down and the finish within sight we were cruising. However, we lost Painey (34), Richie (42) and Ancs in a short space of time and needed another good partnership.
Jacko and Brad put on a few before Jacko departed and it was left to Scooter and Mudflaps to steer us home. The skipper remained undefeated on 20.
"Another good win boys, now we turn our attention to the North Hobart game next weekend", the skipper said back in the rooms.
