Report (by Rod Purves)
The 3's were at home for the 2nd week in a row, and after the disappointing
effort against Kingborough the previous week needed to try and get back on
track.
With the pitch having had 3 days use already, getting first use with the
bat was always going to be an important factor, with a score of 150
mentioned as being a competitive total on the slow pitch For the 3rd week
in a row Rocket won the toss, but unfortunately was not able to have this
luck at lotto the night before. The Lions opened up with the old firm of
Grubb and Fenton, who pushed singles and applied pressure to the Glenorchy
field, but it wasn't long before the partnership turned into a 'sole
trader', with Fenton departing for not many on the board. Hicks then
strode confidently out to the middle, more confidently in fact than the
Magpies appeal which triggered the umpires finger to dismiss him a few
overs later.
Enter A.K. Grubby and A.K both put their heads down and batted solidly,
taking us well past the halfway stage with few troubles. The innings of
Painey the previous day obviously had a big impact on Grubby, as he was the
anchorman for the innings and was eventually dismissed for 36. A.K had
been less watchful though, smashing any loose balls to the unflagged
boundary line (lift your game Smithy!) with an array of pulls and drives.
His innings of 55 ended with a handful of overs to go, but with Heve Dog at
the crease throughout the last 7 overs, we lifted our score to 6/155, which
was probably 20 runs short of what we probably should have got, but was a
total thought to be defendable.
For the 2nd week in a row though the new ball failed to do the trick, as
the only 2 decent batsman seen in a black and white top saw off Stuey and
Rocket (or maybe just 'Cap Gun' at the moment) with few issues as they
scored at a run a ball for the first 10 overs. After his Alderman like
display of slow medium bowling the week before, Hicks was thrown the ball,
and although didn't take a wicket he restricted the scoring. At the other
end, Gibbsy was thrown the ball (which he couldn't catch), and proceeded to
spin a web of intrigue through the middle order, taking 3/32.
With the game precariously poised, A.K and 'Huey' Lewis bowled through the
last dozen overs. The scoring rate was slowly coming back down, with
around 40 runs needed in this time, but 7 wickets in hand gave the Magpies
a chance.
Like their AFL counterparts though, the Magpies struggled with the ability
to play when it really counts, and soon A.K was on fire with the ball with
a cunning array of spin, bounce, drift, half trackers, and 'Jubby' full
tosses. At the other end, Huey had his radar working overtime, as the
batsman were getting bored of playing the same defensive shot ball after
ball, so 2 of them went 'walkabout' and ended up just walking back to the
changerooms as the quick hands of Dogger had the bails off and them
stumped.
The last over came around, and with 6 runs for victory Rocket, A.K and Heve
Dog got together for a chat. "I'll be ok if i don't drop short" were the
words of confidence uttered by A.K, so with that he was given the duties of
trying to seal a memorable victory, while those on the boundary wondered if
the skipper should take matters into his own hands (did they not see my
opening spell?). 4 balls later, it was all over.......... as the stumps
were broken by a ball rivalling the 'Gatting Ball' of 1993, and Kerr-y took
his 5th wicket to record a 5 run victory for the Lions.
An honourable
mention must go to the batsman who, upon getting out, tried to demonstrate
the art of boomerang throwing with his bat. Unfortunately though it didn't
come back, and he also forgot to replace his divot (might need 'China'
Paine to fix it for us).
A great win to the 3rds to get us off and running for the year, and we
can't wait to add another chapter in the history books for the Uni
Lions............
