Report (by Mike Graham-Smith)

Round 4 and the Lions were at home to a demonic presence. The Demons were without a point in the competition and the Lions were coming off back-to-back wins.

Under heavy low cloud and with high humidity we were hopeful of winning the toss. Brad obliged (again) and an undermanned North Hobart batting lineup prepared themselves to bat on the newly prepared wicket.

Hilfy and Brad opened the attack and bowled without luck. Rawson was scratchy and Mizzen was living up to his name. Hilfy, in particular, bowled an inspiring first spell but could not break the left-handed batting combination. Gordy was introduced to the attack and bowled tight lines but could not claim a wicket. Debutant Barwin bowled one over seam up and then Lockie claimed the first wicket. Here we go, or so we thought.

Guinane and Mizzen batted through to lunch and at 1 for 96 things were looking grim. The clouds had burnt off and the hot winds were going to make things tough in the field for the rest of the day. The skipper gathered the troops together at lunch and tore strips off them.

Soon after lunch the score had progressed to 1 for 105 and it was going to be a long day. However, the Lions love a good scrap and Jacko provided the inspiration by diving full length to his right to catch Guinane and Hilfy had his first wicket. This was the start of the end for the Demons and wickets fell in rapid succession after this.

Mizzen fell one run short of his half-century trapped LBW by Gordy, Donaldson was run out for a duck, Valentine became Hilfy's second wicket, Dakin swished at a wide one and Gordy had his second, Collins presented Richie an easy catch in the cordon and Hilfy trapped Free in front.

8 for 131 and North Hobart had lost 7 wickets for 26 runs. Thommo and Hilfy cleaned up the tail and the Demons had been bundled out for 152 runs.

Hilfy was the pick of the bowlers and finished up with figures of 4 for 44 from 24.3 overs. Gordy finished with 2 for 29 and the skipper 2 for 30.

Our reply started disastrously when Lurch was dismissed for a duck. However, the wonder twins came together and, amid discussions of circuit exploits, they started to build a handy partnership. TP was dismissed for 31 runs (3 fours) and the score had moved on to 2 for 65. Richie and Lockie batted out the rest of the day and, at 2 for 88, we were well placed to secure first innings points early on Sunday.

Showers were predicted so the big covers came out. Tassie got up and we knew their 'big guns' would be sleeping in tomorrow.

The Rugby Boys, Richie and Lockie were obviously inspired by the Wallabies' stirring victory against the All Blacks overnight because they come out on Sunday morning and smashed 64 runs of 12 overs and the game was over at 11:45 a.m.

Lockyear was in fine touch and scored 59 runs with 6 fours and 1 six. Richie sent a message to the state selectors by scoring 82 runs, spiced with 11 boundaries, before he was run out. The skipper chimed in with 40 runs and we were bowled out for 250 runs.

North Hobart batted again and, in this inconsequential part of the game, the highlights were Heath Barwin claiming his first first-grade wicket for the club and Richie picking up a wicket.

The Lions gathered in the den and the club song reached a deafening roar while Lockie danced on the massage table. Three in a row - let the good times roll at the Lions' Den at Customs House.
