After a closely fought win at home the week before, the 3's made the trip up to Ferguson Park at Pontville to take on ladder leaders North Hobart. A pre-game pitch inspection revealed that aliens had landed the night before, as they left a 'crop circle' right in the middle of the pitch. They had also been busy doing some renovations in the change rooms, as a wall was missing that meant that both teams had to share the 1 big room. Nice work you idiot ET! Anyway, after some pre-game banter with the opposition, the skipper tried to rally the umpires and opposing captain together to see who was going to do what. Unfortunately for the 2nd week in a row he was left standing around like a shag on a rock waiting for the others to get organised, so again our 3km warm up run had to be cancelled. Next time boys, next time. The Nth Hobart captain had obviously been successful at the Casino the night before, as he was the first person to defeat Rocket at the toss this season, and duly elected to bat. Good choice thought the Uni lads, seeing as there was a tinge of green on top of the pitch and it has a history of being a low scoring ground. Rocket bowled the first over, and on the second ball of the day the Uni boys had their first victim. Obviously not satisfied with hitting the first ball for 4 and the second ball through the cordon for what should have been a comfortable 2, the openers decided to go for a 3rd on the arm of Stuey. Bad choice fellas. 1/6 after 2 balls. The next 5 overs yielded only 2 runs, so they tried to actually hit the ball past the close fielders. Bad choice fellas. An edge through to Hevey, and Rocket had the 2nd wicket with the score at 12. However there was no more success for the Uni boys for another 17 overs, although Stuey bowled out his 8 overs for only 11 runs, and we had them restricted to 2/56 at drinks. Hick and 'Huey' Lewis took over from the openers and bowled tight, miserly spells. Hicks picked up a couple of quick wickets, and not to be out-done Huey followed suit, including the important wicket of Templeman, to end up with 2/22 off 6. At 6/81 and with their best batsman gone, 'Girth' Lambert (the new James Jubb) was introduced into the attack. 2 wickets with his first 2 balls - not a bad start really, especially since they were half trackers, but we'll have 'em! Hicks picked up his 3rd to end with 3/14 off 8, and then Girth picked up their McGrath to end with 3/6 off 2. It should have actually been 3/2 of 8 balls, but the umpire called him for a no-ball (waist high full toss) that was caught. The umpire did admit at the end of the innings that it was an incorrect decision, but unfortunately Girths bowling figures were still ruined. All out for 90. Good work lads. A nice easy chase and we can get home early............ Wrong! A solid start of 0/23 off 9 overs saw the confidence in the team at a season high. Unfortunately Hicks was soon out, and then Stevo made little impression to leave us at 2/25 off 12. Ok boys, still not time to worry. Fergie joined Shiv at the crease, and unfortunately their communication between the creases resembled an Al Queda tv broadcast, and Fergie was soon run out with the score on 32. The ever reliable Heve Dog strode to the crease and looked comfortable from ball one. Unfortunately, so did the fielded who was under Shivs skied pull shot, and he was out for 19. Simsy made little impression, and soon the skipper walked to the crease with the score at 5/44 in the 19th. Dogger and Rocket batted for the next 6 overs and added 19 to the score to start getting things under control, when Dogger tried to take on the 1 armed man in the field and was found short of his crease. Rocket was soon dubiously out a few overs later for 19 (and downgraded the umpires rating in his report), and when Girth soon followed the Uni boys were looking shaky at 8/76. Fortunately, Stuey and Huey were able to see us through to the end. Stuey confidently pushed the singles around, and Huey played a straight bat at the other end, and victory was achieved in the 37th over. A lot of work is to be done with the batting before this weeks 2 day game. The bowling and fielding is taking care of itself, but more value needs to be placed on wickets in the top order. 2 wins out of 4 games is a good start, but with 2 day games attracting more match points, we need to work hard to beat Lindisfarne, who have the premiership that should have been ours last year. |
