(DAY 1). An important clash between an erratic Lindisfarne and our confident 1st XI was met by perfect weather on Saturday. BT again won the toss and again set our bowlers the challenge. Although early in the season, pre-match talk was about forging a spot in the finals. Debutant James G. Kingston, much to his delight, avoided an initiation ceremony (at least for a week anyway) and breathed even easier when the decision was made to spend the first part of the match in the field. The 'haus' and BT were naggingly accurate right from the start and despite a couple of chances going begging, it wasn't long before the long and short of it (the Bray/Webb combo) were introduced to the game. Webb was no doubt hoping it was his day to shine after a lean start to the season, but it wasn't to be. A dangerous inswinger from our Thommo saw his stumps splattered and before long Lindisfarne were in familiar territory at 5/38. At lunch, Lindisfarne was in the early stages of resurgence, with captain Allanby looking dangerous. After the break, the partnership between Allanby and Steele continued to develop. It wasn't until part time seamer Lockyear was introduced, roughly 100 runs later, that the Uni boys were celebrating again. Another newcomer to the club, Heath Barwin, followed Lockyear's important spell. After seeing one Allanby fireball disappear over his head, the talented leggie claimed the same man's vital wicket. The Lions once again had the game back in their court. Only a last wicket partnership between ex-Uni spinner Coombes and paceman Dillon resisted our charge and at tea we were looking at a gettable target of 220. Paine's rock solid defence and King's aggressive strokeplay saw the Uni boys off to a positive start. Despite losing a couple of significant wickets, the Lions were in a desirable position at stumps at 2-101. King hopeful (no pressure Kingy) of scoring his maiden 1st grade century and Cunningham keen to continue impressing state selectors. Highlights of the day included Hilfy's accuracy and heart, Thomo's nonchalant one-handed catch and Mr. Bean's announcement of his new sponsor - Wicked Fizzes (available in five wicked flavours). (DAY 2). The upbeat Uni boys began the second day of the clash against Lindisfarne with a fairly casual warm up and a healthy amount of banter. Confidence was high after last week's efforts and everyone was hopeful of seeing first innings points sealed sometime after lunch (as well as seeing Kingy lift the bat!). One obstacle this week was the return of state rep Andrew Downton who was handed the ball straight away. More or less straight away 'Ed' stamped his authority on the game by inviting Cunningham to play at a short delivery a long way outside off stump. Richie obliged with slashing cut shot and it resulted in a healthy edge through to the keeper. An important wicket to say the least. Nichols joined King and looked solid. Not long after however, Downton got one to jump up at Kingy and he was caught in the slips. An exciting innings from Nathan, who was unfortunately denied his maiden 1st grade ton - out for 83. Captain Brad Thomas met 'Scooter' out in the middle, who was still looking solid. Hopes were high that this might be the winning combination, however it wasn't to be - only a few minutes after BT's arrival Nichols was bowled by Allanby. Only half an hour into the second day and suddenly things were looking a tad grim for the Lions. At 5/125 (or thereabouts) J.G. Kingston, who couldn't find anywhere comfortable enough to hide, sheepishly joined BT at the crease. Although a tough period was imminent, Brad was as Bill would say 'cool as a cucumber' and set about seeing the rest of the Allanby/Downton partnership off. Unfortunately, a ball from Allanby that could only of cut back so much if it hit a miniature trampoline hauled up on a 45 degree angle deprived BT of staging a much needed captain's knock. Things got even worse soon after - Jackett and debutant Kingston both failing to trouble the scorers for even a run. The score now decisively in Lindisfarne's favour at 8/130 (or thereabouts). Bars, Hilfy and Beanos all tried hard, but the Lightning's fun in the sun continued. University, after looking comfortable at 2/101, had crumbled to be all out for 153 before lunch. With the slightest chance of an outright victory and at best an opportunity to show some Uni pride, the Lions tried their best to fire up for another spell in the field. Again, Thommo and Hilfy started us off, this time to a strengthened opening partnership, with Jamie Cox back from state honours. The 'haus' followed up his tremendous 1st innings efforts with another commendable spell of bowling. As well as breaking one of Coxy's nails, the 'haus' also managed to have the 17,000+ first class run getter comprehensively bowled. Other highlights were Cunningham's magic medium pacers, which brought him 3 important wickets and Remi's fantastic diving catch - nice work Sugar! Unfortunately, wickets didn't fall quick enough to give Uni another chance with the bat and the day ended with Lindisfarne 7/224. 1st grade now need to concentrate on holding 2nd place in next week's clash against competition strugglers, New Town. |
