Report (by Andrew Jackett)
(DAY 1). Uni lost the toss and were sent in to bat, on a pitch which was covered in grass. It looked to be a bad one to lose, but the pitch played a lot better than everyone thought.
Hayden Kitchener and Ellis Perry opened the batting; however Hayden was sent back in the first over with the score at 1/1. This brought Rob Sim to the wicket. The innings started very slowly with only 26 runs coming in the first 17 overs. With the score on 16, Ellis was out and Ash Winter came to the crease. Rob and Ash batted sensibly to take the score to 75. Ash then tried to belt the ball out of Pontville but was subsequently bowled for 18.
This wicket brought the skipper, Rob Jubb to the wicket. Simmo took to the Lindisfarne spinner who kept bowling him full tosses with no protection on the legside boundary. This partnership was vital, and at no time did either batsman look like getting out. The runs were flowing in this partnership as Simmo knocked up the first century for the season, closely followed by Ginger bringing up his first 50 for the year. Simmo was out for 105, as the partnership ended at 100. After a few quick wickets toward the end, we declared at 8/247 after 66 overs (one batsman short).
It was a very solid batting performance from the boys, the best so far this year, on a track that looked like it would provide plenty of assistance for the bowlers.
We had 6 overs to bowl at Lindisfarne. Josh Parker and Ash Winter opened the bowling, with Sam Lambert providing a change up with his spinning options. However, there was no wicket, and Lindisfarne ended the day on 0/18. We are in a good position to win this game, so everyone has to keep the pressure on Lindisfarne and be enthusiastic in the field.
(DAY 2).
On a day where the temperature was expected to be around 30°, we knew it would be hard work fielding all day. Lindisfarne resumed at 0/18 chasing our total of 8/247 declared. The team was enthusiastic, but they were feeling the heat even in the pre-game warm-up.
Josh Parker and Ash Winter opened the bowling; however neither could produce a wicket. The first bowling change saw Mark Fenton and Rob Jubb come onto bowl, but there was still no breakthrough. Rob decided to change things up, and brought Hugh Stevens on to bowl his offies. 'Keg' provided the breakthrough by getting one of the openers, with the score on 113. Sam Lambert was later brought on, and picked up a caught and bowled, to remove the other opener. At this stage the score was 2/148, and we were right back in it.
We knew that another wicket would put us right in the mix, but there wasn't to be another success for a while. After 59 overs, Lindisfarne was in a commanding position of 2/220, requiring only 28 runs for victory with over 2 hours to go. The team lifted after the tea break, with Jubby claiming the 3rd and 4th wickets. Josh Parker bowled an exceptional spell of 1/2 off 6 overs (one run was a no-ball), with Keg tying up the other end with his offies. Keg claimed the 6th wicket, with his "mystery ball" and the game was now in the balance at 6/228.
At this stage, the fielding was tight and the bowlers were all bowling consistent areas. When Josh had finished his spell, Mark Fenton continued where Josh left off. After a mix-up by the batsmen, there was a run out, followed by Mark claiming two LBW's in a spell that netted 2/5 off 5 overs. When Mark took his 2nd wicket, the score was 9/243 and there was tension all around the ground, it was anyone's game. However, a four on the last ball of Marks over brought the game to a tie at 9/247. Now it was all up to Keg, who had been bowling an excellent spell at the other end. On the first ball of the over, the ball pitched on the stumps and the batsmen was bowled! A Tie! Hugh finished the day with 3/45 off 15 overs, an excellent performance. He was the most consistent bowler all day. And a special mention must go to Ellis and Simmo for their inspirational, but short, spells.
The game was a credit to the boys, as they knew the game was all but lost when Lindisfarne was 2/220, only to bowl them out for 247. By bowling consistent line and length, we were able to pull off a tie, from a seemingly disastrous position. In the last 23 overs, we picked up 8/27.
At the end of the days play, the umpires commented to both Rob and I, that the boys had played the game in excellent spirit and there was no misconduct by any players. They said it was a pleasure to umpire, so well done boys on a great day.
