Report (by Chris Hevey/Rod Purves)
(DAY 1).
3rd grade started the day by losing key player Tim Steven who was in
hospital after an undisclosed altercation late the previous night.
The wicket looked very green and with a team that had many bowlers and not
as many batters, Heves (stand in Captain with Rocket away interstate) went
to the toss with intention on bowling and came away successful with the Uni
boys taking the field.
With Stevo pulling out it left a vacant spot for who was to take the new
ball with Stuey Alexander. After a quick chat between Hicks and Heves it was
decided that Fred ‘Truck’ Miley would take it and this proved very successful
with the “Truck” taking 3 for 9 off his 8 overs including 4 maidens and
the other opening bowler Stu Alexander taking 1 for 15 off his first spell
of 11 overs (8 runs off Stu’s bowling coming through edges). Many deliveries
by Stu were in fact far to good for the batters and on many occasions they
were not actually good enough to nick it.
After a good opening spell of bowing having the home side in trouble at 4
for 29 the ball was thrown to Rowan Oliver who bowled very well on a wicket
that had very little if any spin it. He was beating the batsmen through
throwing it up and bowling good consistent lines and finishing with 3 for 19
off 13 overs. Stevie Lewis was also thrown the ball at this stage and
returned excellent figures of 7 overs 2 for 12.
With one wicket remaining and Lindisfarne at 9 for 55 it looked like Fenton
would be missing out on his valuable pie but…. the last wicket hung around
for a while so Hicks was then thrown the ball to see if he could clean up
the last wicket. He came close on a number of occasions but returned neat
figures of 5 overs 0 for 4. The ball was then given to Stu Alexander to
finish off the last wicket and he did so, ending up with great figures of
13.4 overs 2 for 15 and was by far the pick of the bowlers in what was an
extremely good bowling and fielding performance. A good thing to see was
that bowlers seemed to bowl in partnerships and this is something we should
continue to work on and it was very successful.
Fenton got his pie much to the disappointment of the rest of his team mates
and quickly knocked down 2 or 3 before going into bat. Opening partner Shiv
left one that pitched well outside off stump, shouldered arms only to find his
off stump being clipped. 1 for 0 not a good start.
Hickster came in and
formed a good little partnership with Fenton before Fenton who looked
settled top edged one back to the bowler and was out for 19. Kerrie went in
and unfortunately came back in almost as quickly. Kerrie gone for naught uni
3’s at 3 for 35. Then Stuey Alexander went in with the Hickster still out
there and looking as comfortable as ever we still thought it was in the bag
and that Heves wouldn’t have to bat so that Rocket (Heve’s replacement next week) could
bat. However with the Hickster departing on 15
leaving us at 4 for 49 with Rowan Oliver strolling out to the crease it was
decided that Heves should bad up and go in at 7. Stu, after looking as good
with the bat as he was with the ball, was unfortunately dismissed for 12
with the score on 59.
Heves went out there with 12 runs required for the
win, was hitting them nicely then like so many of the 3’s batters once he
hit doubles figures and had got a start departed for 12. However first
innings points had been secured and, with Rowan Oliver given a license to hit,
anything could have happened in the last 40 minutes of play.
Rowan Oliver started smashing it making a quick fire 43 with his last 24
runs coming through 6 boundaries. Simmsy went in smashed a quick 14
including 3 boundaries with Tiernan O’Rourke being dismissed it left Steve
Lewis and the Truck Miley to see out the day which they did with Steve being
11 not out and the Truck 2 not out and the Uni 3’s being 9 for 139 and well
in contention for outright points……
(DAY 2).
The 2nd day of the clash against the 'Farnies was one filled with
excitement, even before a ball was bowled. The opposing captain pointed
out to the umpires that the scorebooks from last week didn't balance, so
they were called into action to sort things out.
I'm pretty sure Bruce may regret his decision to alert the umpires to this,
as it resulted in the Uni score changing from 9/138 to 9/149 (to match the
bowling figures). Freddo and Huey were happy with the extra runs, but
Simsy was still claiming he'd been robbed of a 4 the previous week. Also,
Hicks managed to suffer a flat tyre on the way to the game, but the day was
going to be anything but flat for the Uni boys..........
Huey and Freddo walked out to resume where they left off, and for the first
over looked comfortable at least. Unfortunately Huey was bought undone in
the 2nd over of the day with a slower ball........ actually, make that a
slow slower ball........ and the innings ended on 154. An 84 run lead on
the first innings a pretty handy result.
Stuey and Freddo were thrown the new ball again after they bowled so well
in partnership the week before, but with a strong wind blowing at him
Freddo was unable to bowl a consistent line and was soon out of the attack.
Stuey was bowling his now customary brilliant opening spell, and was
unlucky not to have a couple of earlier wickets. Shiv, in slips, managed
to get a hand to an edge off Stueys first ball, and split webbing in
between 2 fingers.
Nick 'Nostradamous' Grubb was watching the game, and
just happened to have his whites in his car, so he came on to substitute
for the rest of the day.
At 0/47 in the 10th over, things were looking a bit grim for the Lions, but
the Farnies decided to help us out. A quick single to square leg proved
their undoing, as Simsy hit the bowlers stumps direct and had a runout.
(note: an errant throw earlier resulted in the skipper giving him a word of
advice, so i'm claiming that one!).
Not long later, Gibbsy and Hicks
managed to hold catches in the cordon off Stuey A, and Rocket chipped in
with an LBW, and Lindisfarnes promising start was reduced to a shaky 4/75
off 22.
Huey Lewis then entered the attack to replace Stuey, who bowled 13 straight
overs to claim 2/38, and he tied the batsman up, as they only scored 1 run
off his first 3 overs. Gibbsy replaced Rocket, who bowled 11 overs into
the wind to claim 1/14, and the ingenious captaincy resulted in 2 wickets
in his first over. Huey followed up with a wicket 3 overs later, and at
lunch they were 7/100.
A change of wicket keepers saw Fenton take the gloves, and some poor early
form saw the skipper wondering 'why did i do it?'. The batsmen decided to
show their lack of running skills once again, as they took on the arm of
Freddo, who powered a return from mid off back to the Fenton, and he
managed to hold on and remove the bails. The last 2 wickets took a while
to fall, and some big hitting saw Gibbsy hit for 3 boundaries in 4 balls to
blow his figures out to 2/26 off 9. Speaking of balls, if anyone happens
to find ours among the boats near the ground, please return it..........
Luckily Smithy was watching and provided us with a replacement pill, and it
wasn't long until Hicks (2/11 off 5.5) wrapped up the tail, while Huey kept
it tight at the other end (1/3 off 7). All out for 137, leaving 54 runs to
get.
Informed by the umpires that only a minimum of 12 overs were required in
the remaining 75 minutes, the Uni boys wondered if the Farnies would employ
time wasting tactics. The batting order was changed so the required
aggression could be shown (Fenton relegated to the lower order) and Hicks
and Kerrie opened up. Hicks first 12 runs came from boundares, and Kerries
first scoring shot was also a boundary, as they made sure the scoring rate
stayed around the 4.5 that was technically required. However, Lindisfarne
showed the spirit that the game should be played in and bowled their overs
as usual with no time wasting.
At 40 for no loss in the 10th over we were cruising, but Kerrie decided to
let the Farnies have some small amount of joy as he was soon dismissed for
13. Gibbsy went out and hit a boundary, and Hicks hit a couple more on his
way to 35 not out, and we soon had the runs after 11.4 overs for the
outright win.
It was a solid display of cricket by the Uni 3's, and we now sit in 3rd
position on the ladder. With 3 wins in a row, and 2 more winable games on
the way, all looks good for a top 4 position over the christmas break, and
a serious charge towards glory at the end of March 2004.
