Report (by Andrew Jackett)

(DAY 1). After seeing the senior teams struggling the previous day against a typically weak New Town, the Under 17's aimed to restore some much needed pride into the club. Looking at the pitch, we thought it would be good to bowl, but at the toss neared we changed our minds. Rob won the toss and we decided to bat.

Hugh Stevens and Ellis Perry opened the batting, and combined to be 0/50 at the first drinks break. They both batted excellently and successfully saw off the new ball, which was moving around quite a bit early on. Hugh was removed shortly after the drinks break for a well made 23, with the score at 1/55. This brought Rob Sim to the wicket. With Ellis ticking over the singles and Simmo punishing the spinners, these two took the score to 149 before Ellis tried to smash the opening bowler and was caught for an excellent knock of 61. Ash Winter came in at 4, but his partner was removed straight after, with Simmo making 44.

Ash Winter and Rob Jubb had now come together, with the score at 3/154 after 43 overs. With about 30 overs left in the day, these two steadied the ship and took to the bowlers. Batting with controlled aggression, the loose balls were punished and we were now back in complete control. These two put on 125 for the fourth wicket before Rob was stumped for 43. Hayden Kitchener had a short stay at the wicket, which brought Sam Lambert to the crease. At this stage the score was 5/284 off 67 overs. The final partnership between these two saw the score go from 5/284 to 5/359 in 8 overs. Ash dominated the bowling all day and ended with 137* and Girth finished on 16* to have an unbeaten partnership of 75.

In what was the most dominant and consistent display of batting by any Uni side this year, the entire innings provided plenty of entertainment for all those watching, with the last 30 overs scoring 2/202. Well done to all the batsmen, but there is still a lot of work to be done to firstly secure first innings points, and hopefully push for an outright win. Being in such a commanding position, we can't be too complacent, and must maintain the pressure on their batsmen.

(DAY 2). On Day 2, the boys were keen for an outright win, and we were in a great position to get our first 10 point game. We declared at our overnight score of 5/359.

Josh Parker and Ash Winter opened the bowling in good conditions. The pitch was playing low, and the enthusiasm was good. However, it was a slow start for us, as New Town moved to 0/27 off the first 8 overs. During this time, Sam Lambert tried to headbutt the ball while fielding and came off with a lump the size of a golf ball, pouring with blood, just under his left eye (Smithy has photos). He went to hospital, so we were left with only 10 players for an hour or two.

An inspired change in the 9th over saw University debutant all-rounder, Tom Howells, picked up a wicket with his 5th ball as he bowled one of the openers. He claimed New Town's 2nd wicket 4 overs later, and things were looking promising for Uni. His spell of 2/8 off 6 overs was the highlight of the morning session, as he showed how to bowl good, consistent areas. The batsmen saw off Tom and Sam Peacock, and they had gained some ascendancy at 2/68. Robby Jubb had brought himself on, and picked up a wicket in his 2nd over, shortly followed by another in his 4th over. At this stage we had regained control, with New Town struggling at 4/82. There had been plenty of chances at this stage with a couple of drop catches, and a lot of edges through the slip cordon. With New Town only having 9 players, we saw this as a great opportunity to climb the ladder.

Rob and Hugh Stevens nagged away at the bowlers and Hugh picked up the 5th wicket. New Town was now 5/86 off 27 overs and things were looking bright for Uni. Their batsmen toiled away for a couple more overs but with Girth returning from hospital, Jubby brought him into the attack and had immediate success. His 2nd ball was smashed for 4, but his 4th ball claimed their 6th wicket. The next ball, Mick McGoldrick did a nice piece of keeping as he had the batsmen stumped down legside. The field was then brought in for the hat-trick ball. The batsman tried to pull it, but edged it onto his foot and it popped up to bat pad. The umpire said it hit the ground, but the batsman later said it didn't. Sam's first over netted 2/4. He was no longer needed as Josh Parker cleaned up the last batsmen one ball later. New Town finished with 107 with still more than half the day to play.

At this stage, tea was taken. Both Rob and I had expressed to the umpires our intentions to enforce the follow-on, but with 8 minutes to go, New Town were out on the ground warming up to field. We were required to tell the opposition that they were still batting, at least 10 minutes before play resumed. This meant we were batting, but we had nothing to gain from another innings so we declared immediately at 0/0. The New Town coach was fuming, and was less than impressed with the happenings.

Setting them a target of 253 off 35 overs, we were well set to take this game. Tom Howells earned the new ball, to partner Ash Winter for this innings. This time it was Ash to strike early, but this was the only wicket for a while. After several bowling changes, New Town managed to pass their 1st innings score of 107, for the loss of only one wicket. It was only until Sam Peacock claimed the other opener that signs were looking better, with the score at 2/108 with 15 overs to go. Again, there wasn't a breakthrough for a while, as the batsmen saw the score through to 2/174 with only 4 overs left in the day. After copping a battering in his 4th over, Ellis Perry claimed a wicket on the 3rd ball. This started a quick succession of wickets, with the next 3 wickets falling in the space of 7 balls for 1 run. Ash picked up his 2nd wicket, Tom picked up his 1st wicket for the innings, and a mix up between the batsmen created a run out. With 2 overs to go, New Town was 6/180 with Uni only requiring 2 more wickets. We were unlucky not to get these last two, as New Town ended the day at 6/184.

This was an excellent game for the boys, as it was the first game where both our batting and bowling was consistent and dominant.
