Report (by Chris Hevey)
(DAY 1). The Uni 2’s were fielding a very young team with only two players being over
20. With such a young team in the 2’s against a team that has guys who have
played quite a few games of first grade it was going to be an interesting
first day of play.
The day started by former club mentor/coach Ben Harrison taking the twos
through warm-ups. The decision was made that if Chops won the toss we would
send New Town out into the field. With New Town winning the toss we expected
to be sent out to field in the heat however an inspired decision by their
Captain to send us in paid immense dividends.
First ball of the match saw Grubb push a quick single, both batters home easy
through some great running. The day looked like it was going to be a long one
for the Bucks in the field however…… the second ball of the match (Kermit's
first) saw a ball which was down legside; Kerm obliged and glanced it. The
only problem was the Bucks keeper had dived full stretch and taken a beauty. Uni
2’s 1 for 1 off 0.2. Not the start we were after. Especially when Matt Lister
departed not much longer without scoring many. This left Captain Chops and
John Candy (Grubby) to battle it out. The two batted very well with Chops
hitting them very nicely and with Grubby playing the supporting role it looked like we were out of trouble. Chops departed for a
well made 32. Huddo strolled in looked the goods but unfortunately didn’t
get amongst too many runs. Grubb followed not long after. JJ Noodle Snack
(Jubby) went an over later, then Stevo departed an over after that. Heves in
the following over with both Perko and Kerrie departing a few overs later to
leave Kibster about 10 not out and the Uni 2’s bowled out for 87. A shocking
batting performance which shows that many of the 2’s need to get some good
time in the nets over the following weeks.
With the boys having to bowl a minimum of 34 overs Perko and Kibster went
about restoring some pride for the 2’s. With both bowlers bowling very well
Kibster picked up the first wicket in the fourth over providing Heves
with his first Second Grade keeping dismissal. New Town were really on the
attack and although we were bowling really well there was some big hitting
taking place with one batsmen in particular destroying us. He made 120 and
was finally very well caught by the Kibster off the bowling of Huddo. After
this wicket it saw runs stop and wickets flowing with Kerrie bowling a great
spell of leg spin ripping through the middle order and would have had a few
more wickets if some umpiring decisions had gone both his and Heve’s way.
Perko then came back on and finished up the tail. With New Town a batter
short it was felt by all that the innings was over. However with the last
wicket being take at 2 minutes to 6 and the Umpires calling stumps with the
Bucks having an 11th batter available next week they could decide to bat on,
a sporting decision could be to declare……
A disappointing day for the 2’s but things will get better. Next week we
should seek to bat out the day gaining some valuable batting practice which
is vital leading into Christmas.
(DAY 2).
Day 2 of the match started with the Bucks declaring, pushing for outright
points. An interesting days play would be had as the wicket looked like it
would have a bit in it after the rain we received late Friday and early
Saturday.
The team were informed by Captain Chops
that there would be some major batting order changes with some guys being
given a go as spots will be up for grabs with the 3 state 19 boys coming
back to the club.
However the regular opening combination of Grubb and Kermit strolled to
crease to start the day with some good tight bowling and a bit in the wicket
scoring was restricted early with Grubb and Kermit seeing the first few
overs off until Grubb departed for about 10. Heves going out at 3 after
making a duck at 8 the week before was an interesting move but he and Kermie
started to build a good partnership until Kerm was out for a well made 27.
Stevo walked in at 4 and he and Heves went about putting a partnership
together with both trying to push to hold on to a second grade spot. Heves
and Stevo put on close to 50 until Stevo was well caught bringing to end a
fine innings of 22. Kerrie came out looked good but unfortunately left a
ball that ducked in and bounced a bit clipping his front pad before going on
to bowl him. Chops came in and Heves departed for 34 after a long time at
the crease.
This bringing in Huddo. Both Huddo and Chops started to hit the
bowling all over the park until Chops was given LBW for 26 with Huddo going
not long later for very well made hard hitting 31. With China smacking a
quick fire 27 at the end the Uni 2’s were bowled out for a much more
respectable total of 210 with the Bucks having a minimum of 6 overs at the
end of the day with 72 in need for the outright.
Perko and Kibster had other ideas and both bowled extremely tight and with
great control which is what we will be hoping that they do next week against
the Bay with the Bucks finishing at 3 for 17 off 6 overs. With next week’s
game against the Bay being the last one before Christmas lets hope we can
go into the break with a win!!
