Report (by Andrew Jackett)

With rain during the week affecting the weekend's pitches, we got to the ground unsure of whether play was going to commence on time, if at all. Upon closer inspection, the pitch was very soft and the umpires agreed to a 29 over match starting at 2:45. This gave us plenty of time to do any last minute Christmas shopping and Ancs certainly took advantage of this time.

We sent our newly appointed Australian U/19 captain, Tim Paine, to toss the coin in a hope to change Brad's luck with the tosses. It paid off and we sent South Hobart - Sandy Bay into bat on what looked like a bowler friendly wicket.

The innings commenced with Ben Hilfenhaus and Gordon Kerr taking the new ball. Gordon struck early removing one of the openers, with Andrew Jackett effecting a run-out shortly after to have SHSB struggling early. Gordon was rewarded for his consistent bowling a few overs later, to have Polkinghorne out on the point boundary. At this stage they were about 3/30 off 10 overs, with their danger-man already out. We gained more ascendancy during the middle part of the innings, with run-outs going to Nick Paine, Tim Paine and Gordon. Brad Thomas and Graeme Cunningham also toiled away to pick up another 4 wickets between them. In what was a strong display of bowling, we managed to bowl SHSB out for 119.

With a modest total to chase, we did not want to throw the game away, but Scott Nichols and Nathan King opened the innings for us. Kingy, continuing his excellent form, batted with controlled aggression, dispatching the undermanned SHSB bowling lineup all over the ground. Scooter provided valuable support at the other end as he was able to turn over singles and keep the run rate high. Scooter was the first man out. This brought Painey to the crease. Determined not to give their wickets away, Painey and Kingy took the score close to the target, before Kingy was out for an excellent 40. Richie came in and didn't waste anytime, dispatching George Bailey for 18 runs off one over, including a massive 6 over the club rooms. Richie was out for 36, on about 3/110, still with 8 overs to go. The skipper, Brad strode out, but was unfortunately out without troubling the scorers. Ancs and Painey then proceeded to take the score to 4/120, passing SHSB score with 4 overs left. Painey remained 22* and Ancs finished on 5*.

This game put us 2 points clear of Clarence on the Kookaburra Cup ladder, whose game was cancelled due to rain. We play Clarence in the first game after Christmas in a one-day match, which decides the top position on the ladder. For all those that can get there, it will be a great match to watch, and all the support would be much appreciated. The game will be played at Bellerive Oval.
