With 2nd grade being cancelled the day before due to the rain during the week, we were unsure whether or not we would get away on a moist and green Queenborough pitch. Thankfully, we won the toss and sent South Hobart - Sandy Bay into bat and the game started on time. The match got under way with Josh Parker and Tom Howells opening the bowling. In the 2nd over of the match, Tom struck with his 4th and 5th balls. On the hat-trick ball, the ball was turned down to fine leg, but going for the 2nd run, Josh Parker created a run-out, so there was a team hat-trick. With this excellent start, SHSB was 3/5 after 2 overs. The batsman stabilised but another 7 overs later, Josh struck and was on a hat-trick by bowling both the batsmen with superb yorkers. When these two finished their opening spell of 12 overs, the score was 5/18. We were in the box seat, but there wasn't another wicket for another 12 overs. However, in this time SHSB only scored another 28 runs. Rob Jubb broke through in his last over by picking up 2 consecutive wickets, to be on another hat-trick, the third attempt of the day. The 2nd wicket included an excellent diving catch from Sam Lambert, fielding at first slip. This tight 12 over spell from Ash Winter and Rob left SHSB struggling at 7/46 after 24 overs. The tailenders toiled away, but Sam Lambert picked up 2 late wickets, and Sam Peacock claimed one to bowl SHSB out for 67, off 29 overs. Not only was it an attacking display of bowling with wickets falling rapidly, but the bowlers all bowled tight and consistent areas. Set a small target of 67, we were hoping to wrap up the game early, without losing any wickets. Chris Hevey and Rob Jubb opened the batting, but Heves was out in 4th over after edging one through to the keeper. This brought Matt Lister to the crease, and he was keen to show the boys why he is in the Tassie U/17's. Unfortunately, he was out next over, LBW to a right arm bowler coming round the wicket. The decision looked to be dubious, but nevertheless he was given out. At 2/10 off 5 overs, we needed to regain composure, and that is something Rob and his new partner, Ash, were able to do. Both batsmen started to take to the attack a bit more, and we were soon 2/52 after 12 overs. The next over, SHSB brought their "gun" leg spinner into the attack to try and create a miracle. Fortunately for us, the opposite happened, as he bowled 6 long-hops in the over. For the last 4 of these balls, Ash dispatched them to the mid-wicket boundary. With 18 runs coming off the 13th over, we brought up the win. It was a great game for the guys, as the bowlers were tight and consistent all day, on what were bowler friendly conditions. Our bowlers were backed up by the batsmen, especially Rob and Ash, who showed great composure in their batting. |
