Rhett Lockyear 2-36 |
The day was set for a spectacle, as we, the 1-day ladder leaders, took on the undefeated Clarence at their home ground, Bellerive Oval. With the International matches being played on the ground later in the week, we knew the ground would be well prepared. After winning the toss, Brad elected to bat on what was an absolute road. The innings opened with Nathan King and Tim Paine. It was a short stay for Kingy, as he was run-out at the non-strikers end in the 3rd over, after Painey refused a single. Rhett Lockyear came to the crease at number 3, and with Painey moved the score up to 1/69 at a steady rate of just under 4 an over. These two didn't seem too troubled until Locky was caught behind for a well made 26. Graeme Cunningham was the next batsman in, and he was keen to show why he excels in the shorter form of the game. Painey and Richie continued the steady progress to reach 2/99 before Painey was bowled by their off-spinner. He made 45. With Richie hitting them crisply, the skipper, Thommo was next in. It was these two players who gave us with a solid platform to base our innings on, as they shared a partnership of 99 runs off 119 deliveries. This partnership included many boundaries, and a lot of punishment of the loose balls. In the 41st over, Richie was finally dismissed for 71 off a modest 69 balls. The score was now at 4/198, with Nick Paine joining Thommo. Within the space of 4 balls, it was 6/202 as Thommo was dismissed for 47 followed by Paul Ancher the next ball. After the mini collapse, Andrew Jackett joined China, and with 7 overs to go, they needed to build a partnership to establish a good target. Hard running between the wickets saw these two put on 30 for the 7th wicket, before Jacko was bowled for 15. Ben Hilfenhaus followed him next ball, getting stumped off a wide. With China, who remained 10 not out, Heath Barwin saw the score through to 8/242 off the 50 overs. Batting on an oval much bigger than most club grounds, it was a great testament to our batsmen, who ran hard all day and pushed for the singles rather than trying to be too aggressive with their big hitting. Setting Clarence 243 for the win, we knew there was still a lot of work to be done, and thankfully everybody in the team was alert to that. Hilfy opened the bowling, and set the tone early registering a maiden in his first over. Gordon Kerr, bowling at the other end was equal to the task by opening with a maiden. These two were both extremely tight, going for only 18 runs off the first 12 overs. However, the first breakthrough didn't come through either of these bowlers, but it was an inspirational run-out from Thommo to pave the way. Locky and Thommo came on for the next bowling change, and continued where the openers left off - bowling tight. Locky picked up two valuable wickets, and with Beany and Heath Barwin claiming wickets later on, Clarence never really put up a fight. With more tight bowling from all the bowlers, Clarence only got 7/188 off their 50 overs, which gave us one of our most comfortable wins for the season. Beating Clarence is always cherished, but this was by far our best performance of the season to date, as our fielding, batting and bowling was all good and consistent for the whole game. This win puts us a game and a half clear of 2nd place on the Kookaburra Cup table, with only one game to go. |
