Report (by Rod Purves)
Fresh from a relaxing break, the Uni 3rds ventured to the Cross Roads oval
to take on the Roos. The ground, as usual, resembled the surface of Mars
with it's lumps and bumps. NASA would have been better off painting the
grass red and taking photos of it, rather than spending millions on a
remote control Tonka truck!
Anway, back the cricket, and Paul "Mac Daddy" McNamara made a return to the
Lions, his first of 2 games as our import, and we welcomed Roachy back from
his "Leyland Brothers' adventure of the Eastern mainland states.
Warm-ups were as gentle as ever, as we didn't want to peak too early.
Continuing his outstanding form Rocket won the toss (5 out of 7) and
elected to bat, being only the second time this season we were setting the
target. The batting order was noted and resembled an all-star line up,
with Stuey A at 8, Gibbsy at 9, and Roachy at 10!
Mac Daddy and Hicks opened the batting and were cautious early, with one
opening bowler bowling 4 consecutive maidens, but all was looking ok at
0/31 off 10. Mac Daddy (13) was dismissed with the first ball of the 11th
over after being struck on the pad. Only the bowler seemed interested in
making an appeal though, but the umpy still somehow thought it was worthy
of note.
Huddo strolled to the crease and looked solid from the start, lifting the
tempo with 3 boundaries from his first 4 scoring shots, and some good
running between the stumps. The score was taken to 73 in the 17th over
before Hicks was out for 19, tragically 1 run short of getting a mention in
the Mercury. Kerry joined Huddo in the middle and was cautious for a few
balls, before unleashing a cover drive for 6 to start his scoring.
The rest of the team was given a display in partnership batting, as Huddo
and Kerry combined through the middle overs to maintain a run rate of about
5 per over throughout their 57 run partnership. In the 29th over though,
Huddo (51) was undone by a cunning pie throwing spinner, who bowled a
"Jubby" special and had him caught and bowled. Jubby (15) himself strode
out to the crease and looked comfortable as always, before he flashed at a
ball outside the off stump and was given out caught behind after hitting
the pitch.
Streety was next to make an appearance at the crease, but was soon given
his marching orders - an interesting LBW decision really considering the
ball hit the middle of his bat first! Rocket walked out to the crease for
the last 11 balls, and the Clarence captain noted that he did not appeal
for Streetys' dismissal, but still wasn't going to display 'The Spirit of
Cricket' and recall him.
While the batsmen around him came and went, Kerry compiled a brilliant 63
not out, with 7 boundaries and 2 sixes. Extras did a great job too, and the
Uni boys had compiled 5/206 off their 40 overs.
Rocket, hampered by a hamstring strain, and Stuey shared the new ball as
usual, and in the 3rd over Rocket produced a nice little outswinger that
took the edge and was gladly accepted by Hicks with the gloves. However,
this was the only joy the Lions had for a while, as the Roos somehow
managed to survive Stueys usual impressive spell and keep the run rate at
above 4 per over, thanks to some hot pies from Rocket.
Roachy (2/16) and Huey (2/17) (also given the nickname of Gwenyth by Huddo)
entered the attack after the openers and took control. Roachys pace and
accuracy, coupled with Hueys cunning swing, netted 4 quick wickets, taking
Clarence from 1/67 to 5/92. Highlights included the diving caught and
bowled from Roachy, and the lightning fast stumping from Hicks off Stuey.
The game then continued to drift, which was great for us as the required
run rate soon reached 10 per over. Huddo and Gibbsy bowled the last 14
overs between them, and kept things tight while the Roos tried swinging the
willow. Both obtained good turn and bounce from the pitch, and Huddo
snared 2/25. Gibbsy was unlucky, having 3 catches dropped in 1 over, with
Stuey knocking his dropped chance over the line for a boundary. Streety
was a highlight in the field, chasing hard on every occasion.
In the end, Clarence could only manage 7/157 off their 40 overs, and the
Lions took out a well deserved win.
A great start to the second half of the season, as we are now only 2 points
off top spot, but still only 2 points ahead of 3rd. Our fielding is still
an area that needs improvement, but with the top 6 batsman looking in good
form, we are well positioned to establish ourself in the top 2 over the
next few weeks.
