(Day 1). On a day much dominated by grey skies, drizzle, showers and finally heavy rain, Kingborough were forcibly careful in their batting with Uni's bowling being mean from the outset. Ben Hilfenhaus bowled 13 overs straight from the Uni. end and after a brilliant piece of pressure captaincy, which saw only one fieldsman in front of square, trapped Dillon lbw in the 12th. over. Gordon Kerr snared the second wicket in the following over with Nick Paine taking a superb catch at short mid-wicket to dismiss the Knights captain (0.32 seconds of reaction time if Tony Greig was commentating!). The only winner for the rest of day 1 was the rain, which saw only 25 overs bowled and play finally abandoned at 4.00 pm and, given a weather forecast more applicable to mid-winter than bushfire season for day 2, any play (let alone result) seems unlikely. (Day 2). No comment on the Weather Bureau! Not a cloud in the sky so play commenced at 11.30. There appeared to be two scenarios for either team to gain any points - Kingborough could attack and set Uni. a tempting target or Uni. could bowl the opposition out as quickly as possible and then go for the runs. Uni. (with no other option) opened with Gordy, bowling into a stiff breeze, to complete his un-finished over from day 1 and Hilf continued from the Uni. end. Gordy's 2nd. over of the day saw the end of the prolific Dawson with an edge to Paine (T) behind the stumps. Hilf was tearing in, especially when Murray was on strike, with Jacko donning the helmet at short leg and bouncers aplenty. Murray somehow survived and with DiVenuto added 20 before Gordy again found an edge to Paine (T) dismissing DiVenuto with the score on 63. Gordy's spell of 2-11 off 7.4 overs had nearly erased the first of the game's options and greatly enhanced the second. Beany came on and immediately had Hilf's mate Murray caught at mid-off - 5/91. Hilfy had bowled 23 great overs straight (albeit over two days) and was replaced by Heath Barwin. It then became something of the Bean show, getting Scott caught and bowled and, next ball, having Jamie Knott LBW, not offering a shot to reduce Kingborough to 7/124. Skipper Thomas replaced Heath and immediately got Swards caught behind causing the umpires to call for luncheon with the Knights reeling at 8/125. The Knights obviously hoped to bat for as long as possible but - forget that! Beany claimed the last two wickets and Uni. were facing a meagre run chase of 151 off a minimum of 63 over. Lurch and Paine (T) opend the Uni. innings cautiously/scratchilly and had taken the score to 0/12 after 9 overs when the weather bureau's belated correctness caused a minor worry, with play suspended for twenty minutes (and six overs less in the day's play). When play resumed the pair set about the chase with intent, Lurch being the first dismissed with the score on 34 in the 13th. over. Rhett entered the arena, re-uniting the boxing partnership, and began in a reasonably careful mode before letting loose. Surprisingly Kingborough, although being hammered to all parts of the ground, didn't make a bowling change until the 21st. over, by which time Lockdog definitely had his eye in and treated the crowd to a great display of batting. By the 30th. over he had reached his 50 (off 45 balls with 9 fours) and, with Paine (T) also by now playing shots to all parts of the ground the outcome of the game was way beyond question. The duo put on a hundred partneship in 20 overs and the 151 mark was reached in the 38th. over. Rhett was finally out for 77 in 86 minutes. His innings included 3 singles(!) and 14 fours. No respite for Kingborough though as Richie entered the fray and continued where Rhett had left off. Paine (T) reached his own 50 but was out shortly afterwards whilst Richie blasted his way to his own 50, at which point the game was called off and Kingborough were happy to get off the University Oval as quickly as possible whilst the Uni. boys headed for the rooms for their normal discordant rendering of the Club song. The win should (given other results) see Uni. clear away from the bottom four and looking good for a top two finish at least. ![]() Jarrod Cunningham (on the right) and Rhett Lockyear celebrate the win with high 5s after the game. |
