Report (by Chris Hevey)

The under 17’s game this week saw a game between to the two top teams, with Kingborough being undefeated on top. However both teams were well undermanned, mainly to do with the current Hutchins tour which saw Kingborough missing 3 players and a further player to the state 17’s and Uni missing 6 players all to the Hutchins tour. Kingborough still went into the game as favourites leaving Uni as the underdogs.

Kingborough won the toss and elected to bat. With a howling wind going from one end of Olinda Grove to the other stand in skipper Heves decided that Tom Roach would open bowling down wind and Hughy Stevens would open from the other into the wind bowling darting off spinners. The Kingborough openers did little early with the only runs coming off extras and the odd edge off Roachy with most somehow missing a fielder in the cordon. Roachy picked up the first wicket with a short ball into the ribs with the batter popping it up, Heves doing the rest.

Tommy Howells came on down wind after Roachy and quickly ripped through the other opening batsman knocking over his off stump. A few overs later there was much controversy over a disputed catch which went to backward point towards Hayden “Kitchy” Kitchener who took the catch just off the ground. The batsman started to walk but then decided to stand his ground. Hayden said it carried, the umpires came together and then simply said not out. Heves not happy and asked the umpire what was wrong, why wasn’t it out? With the umpire just making a little hand gesture Heves continued to ask wondering why, if the umpires couldn’t see it, you wouldn’t believe the fielder who had said that the ball had carried. One umpire then walked up to Heves and informed him that he was going on report with the other umpire then coming down to talk to sort out why it wasn’t given. An over later drinks were called with further discussions had between Heves and the umpires. With one umpire not even knowing that Heves was on report and was actually quite surprised that he had been put on report!

The next 14 overs went along fairly well with some good bowling performances on a ground where, if you beat the field, it was quite likely to go for four. Tom Howells finished his bowling spell very well with figures of 6 overs 2 for 25. Sam Peacock also bowled a very good spell with his 5 overs picking up a wicket as well as bowling tight. Rain came and the players were forced to leave the field for 10 minutes with the umpires deciding to make it a 39 over game rather than 40. Hayden and Roachy were given the job of bowling the last 6 overs and did it fairly well especially young Hayden finishing with neat figures of 7 overs none for 25. With a huge mention going to Hughy Steven who bowed out with the new ball and collected very tidy figures of 8 overs none for 26. A good job by Uni to restrict Kingborough to 163 although it could have been a lot less had we been a bit cleaner in the field. However I felt this target was definitely reachable.

The only problem being that we only had Tom Roach for 15 minutes maximum as he was going away with school and had to leave at 4 pm! He went out there with Keg Leg Steven and started proceedings with a beautiful cover drive which had no problems reaching the boundary. He continued to hit the ball very cleanly as well as some great running between the wickets with Keg. With Roachy’s old man calling him in after 4 overs with the score at 0 for 56 after the first 4 overs the Kingborough players, coaches and supporters looked rather shell shocked.

Kitchy went in and looked fairly good before getting a good ball and being dismissed quite cheaply. This brought Heves to the crease. Heves hit a few early boundaries and with Hugh took the score on to 90 odd before Hugh had a ball duck back in a bit being bowled for 21 havind scored at a run a ball or there abouts. Ellis Perry strode to crease and he and Heves batted through to drinks with Heves hitting a few boundaries and Ellis pushing the ones and twos. The score at drinks was 115 with the run rate just under 6.

Heves was out 4 or 5 overs after drinks for 39 which brought young Joe Arnold to the crease for his first game back after holidaying for the last few months! With 6 wickets in hand and 15 overs remaining Uni required just 35 runs. Ellis went quickly after Heves bringing Tom Howells to the crease. Tom had said he wasn’t too good with the bat, but a few of the boys said he hits the ball very hard and that’s exactly what he did hitting 5 fours on his was to a quickfire 27 which came off no more than 15- 20 balls. With Tom being dismissed with only a run or two required it brought Will Robinson in for his first game back this year with Will and Joey Arnold seeing us over the line in what was a great win for a very undermanned team. With the only improvements to made with regards to the odd bit of sloppy fielding.

Heves went up to the umpires 10 minutes after play to see what was happening with the report with one umpire convincing the other that it was far too drastic to report him. Heves was told to be on his best behaviour and to watch himself.

This win could give Uni a slight edge over Kingborough and the rest of the competition.
