Feeling confident after last weeks solid win over Clarence, the Uni 3rds assembles at Kingston High School for the top of the table clash against Kingborough. Although missing a number of players due to the Hutchins trip and other unavailabilities, the expectation was to perform well in a crititcal game. Much to the delight of players who participated in the corresponding game last season, the boundary was actually at a decent distant from the pitch, so top edges for 6 or underarming the ball to the keeper from the boundary would not occur this time around. For only the 3rd time this season the opposition won the toss and elected to bat. Former Kingston High School students Rocket and Special K, coming back from injury, combined as the opening bowling combination and were on top early. Disciplined bowling restricted the runs and Rocket struck in the 7th over, courtesy of a great catch down legside by Hicks. That was to be the only joy for Uni for the next 27 overs, as the Kingborough batsman occupied the crease well, albeit assisted by a couple of dropped catched. Special K had the brilliant figures of 0/4 off 5 from his first spell, and Huey had 0/9 off 4, as Kingborough went into drinks at 1/53 off 20. After drinks the Uni side let the bowling and fielding standard slip considerably, with a number of short balls and fielding errors. It wasn't until the re-introduction of Special K in the 34th over that another wicket came about via an lbw, and this started what was hopefully going to be the Uni fightback, as K picked up another 2 wickets to end with 3/23. Huey picked up 2 wickets in an over, both brilliantly stumped by Hicks, to end up with 2/37, and Rocket picked up a wicket on the last ball of the innings via a great catch on the mid wicket fence from Huey to finish with 2/26. Kingborough managed 7/191 off their 40 to set up an exciting run chase. Mac Daddy and Hicks opened the batting and were travelling nicely into the 4th over, when Hicks hesitated going for a short single and was run out. Stuart Hall, making his return to the club, entered the fray at number 3 and looked pretty good until he tried to avoid an awkward bouncer and hit his stumps to make the score 2/33 from 9. Streety was elevated to number 4 to provide assistance to Mac Daddy, and this partnership took us past drinks. Streety showed great determination in valuing his wicket, while Mac Daddy rekindled the power hitting memories of old with some great drives. Unfortunately his innings was bought undone when he was on 56, and Uni were 3/93 in the 24th over, still in with a good show. Unfortunately the rest of the order failed to show any fighting spirit, as wickets were soon lost quickly courtesy of some very poor shot selections. Of the batsman. only Streety and Gibbsy managed to join Mac Daddy in scoring double figures, while extras was as valuable as ever with 25. Eventually we were bowled out for a disappointing 140. The loss puts us 6 points behind top of the table Kingborough, while Lindisfarne should now have jumped into 2nd place (yet to be confirmed as i have not seen the result of their game). Again, fielding let us down at critical stages. Vital chances were not held on to, and this resulted in extra runs to chase and therefore extra pressure on batsman, which was not handled well. Let's hope we can resolve some issues on the training track, and get back on the winners list in our favoured 2 day version of the game. |
