Report (by Steve Kerr):

(Day 1). No play.

(Day 2). So it was now a two day game to be played in one day (plus 30 minutes)! Always difficult to get a result in these circumstances unless either team bats very badly or bowls very well! It was top (us) v. bottom (them).

Hilfy was still out injured, so Uni. decided to spare no expense in effort and dollars and quickly arranged flight reservations, visa rerequirements etc. to secure the services (not of Andy Blignaut) but one of Uni.'s own favourite sons Josh Marquet. After spells in England, South Africa and, of late, Melbourne, big 'Jose' was back - and playing at the same ground where he single-handedly demolished the Farnies last time he played there. He'll have to wait to achieve his 'seasoned all-rounder in the Twos' expectations.

Stand-in tosser Paine (TD) called correctly and Lindisfarne were invited to bat. Bowling out the opposition cheaply (and quickly) is the most obvious method of achieving a result in these truncated games so a good start for Uni.

Things got better in Nessie's second over - a great slips catch by Bakesy had the Farnies at 1/4. Next ball it was 2/4 - the off stump knocked back and Nessie on a hat-trick. It didn't happen but Nessie and fellow opener skipper Brad kept things very tight.

Enter Josh Marquet in the 12th. over and the gathered Uni. faithful waited with bated breath - how had the two years off treated the big fellow? It didn't take too long for Josh to show that not much had changed - his fifth ball (not too short but climbing savagely) found the edge and the catch was accepted with much delight by Richie (now on a roll with his catching). in the slips.

No more success for Uni. for two overs, but the first ball of Jose's third over saw Tassie discard/hopeful Jamie Cox caught behind and Lindisfarne were 4/32 in the 16th. Over. A maiden from Gordy's first over (replacing Nessie), Josh ran in for the second delivery of his fourth over, pulled up short with a calf strain, down came the rain and the players took an early lunch.

With Josh out the attack for the rest of the day it would fall to Nessie and Gordy to lead the pace attack, with Brad, Beany and China jnr. (both Chinas back in the team!) to try to finish of the Farnies as quickly as possible.

The resumption of play saw the Paine brothers switch roles with Nick now behind the stumps, giving brother Tim's broken finger a rest. Nick could well have acquired a similar injury in dropping the easiest of chances in the first over. Gordy claimed his first of the game, bowling the opposition skipper who shouldered arms to a ball that removed his off stump.

Lindisfarne enjoyed a brief resurgence - the batting suggesting that they were looking for quick runs and a declaration. Gordy went for 8 and 18 in successive overs (from his ex-Vacation cricket team mate Nathan Webb) but got his revenge by removing the leg stump next over. Brad bowled Webby's fellow resurgent, Nessie claimed another two (one lbw, one bowled) and the Farnies were reduced to 9/117 with plenty of overs left in the day.

The last wicket just wouldn't come! Skipper Brad called on his usual reserves of surprise and called Paine (TD) from the sidelines to attempt to break it. This week without succes - but brother NJR ended the innings with a superlative leg side stumping which not only proved too quick for the replay screen but also atoned for horrendous drop earlier. The Farnies all out for 146.

After a quick consultation of the rule book, the Umpires decided that there were 43 overs to be bowled, and then changed it to 46! Just over 3 an over - it was now just a simple and reasonably easy game to win. Unless Uni. batted as they had the last time (heaven forbid).

With regular opener Lurch not quite himself (or at least his left knee cap, which was pointing to square leg following its owners incredible effort in saving a boundary earlier) Lockdog joined Paine (TD) to the crease to open the batting. The required run-rate was surpassed by the second ball bowled and the pair batted aggresively, but sensibly, without giving a chance. Both were advancing down the wicket on occasion and it was fascinating to watch Rhett ask for middle on the crease, then ask again a metre forward, then take guard even further down the wicket and still advance! Could this be the first time that a batsman was actually standing closer to the bowling crease than the batting crease?

The pair took the score to 45 before Lockdog (now standing somewhere near his crease with the 'keeper up) edge one to first slip. Some glorious drives and cuts in his innings and Uni. were now well on their way. Enter Richie - two lovely off drives and then one scooped to mid-off. - 2/61. This brought the blossoming legal firm of Paine and Paine together. Paine (NJR) is working on the belief that the fewer runs he scores the higher up in the order he bats, a theory which recently can not be disproved. The temptation of the Farnie's leggie proved his downfall - which would see him opening the batting next week. Uni. 3/76.

The required run rate was now only two an over - sensible batting with ones and the odd boundary if needed would see the good guys home. But with Bakesy next in that probably isn't in the equation. The usual couple of 'plays and misses' and then the Farnie's leggie's team mates are twice searching for balls headed towards the Lindisfarne Yacht Club and a part of the Hobart Regatta.

Bakesy quickly passed Paine (TD)'s score and Uni. also (much more importantly) passed Lindisfarne's total! Another six to Bakesy but his fourth didn't quite make it there - caught at long on. Uni. batted on (despite some thoughts of declaring and getting a few wickets which would count towards bonus points maybe more), Paine (TD) passed his, by now un-recognised half century and with China jnr. were not out at stumps - Uni. recording a first innings win which may well have been needed to maintain their top spot on the ladder.
