Report (by Mike Graham-Smith):
(Day 1).
A day which was interrupted by showers on many occasions - much like the Kooka final last season. As on that day, the last front (that ended play for the day at about 4:00 p.m.) was the last one and blue skies prevailed for the remainder of the day.
We limped to 3 for 26 after many 'stops and starts'. Paine (T) was caught at square leg, Nessie (who opened the batting) was caught at the wicket and Richie got a leading edge and was caught at mid off. Lockdog and the skipper are currently at the wicket.
Quick runs will be the order of the day tomorrow and a sporting declaration might be on the cards.
(Day 2).
Fine weather greeted us for day 2 and hopes were high that we wouldn’t have to move the covers a dozen times today.
Lockdog and BT took up where they left off yesterday but the skipper soon perished caught at the wicket. Bakesy clipped one off his toes for 4 but was out soon afterwards and Matty Lister and Smithy didn’t last long either. At 7 for FA a partnership was required. Paine (NJR) put some value on his wicket and hung around for a little while but Painey went the same way as everyone else to this point in time - dismissed for single figures.
All along Rhett had been batting magnificently and placing real value on his wicket. He was still despatching the bad balls (and some good ones) however. Two memorable shots included a lofted off drive for 6 and a lofted cover drive for 6, on one knee, that landed in the hedge. That was one of the best shots I’ve seen at the University Oval.
Rhett and Hilfy formed a good partnership and Hilfy combined resolute defence with some deft pat-a-cake shots to race into the 20s. Meanwhile, Rhett raced into the 90s and Beany was hoping that he wouldn’t be required to face any deliveries with Rhett on 99.
The action for the day started to heat up at this stage. One of the umpires, Wade Stewart, was forced to leave the ground with pains in his chest. An ambulance was called for the second time in a few months for chest pains - the last time was just before Christmas for Penny Patterson, our first grade scorer.
Reeks was called upon to don the umpires jacket and take up his position at square leg. Surely, there wouldn’t be a run out given from square leg now! Hilfy was dismissed with Rhett in the 90s and Beany’s worst nightmare came true. Luckily, or as Beany would have us believe, by good management Beany survived a few overs and Rhett made it to his first century for the club. His innings stood out like a beacon in our batting innings and underlines his enormous potential.
Not long after reaching his century Rhett was dismissed robbing Beany of his century and we were dismissed for 166.
Kingborough’s innings never reached any great heights. Dawson held us up for a while and Swards showed some ticker but our bowling and fielding was first-rate which augurs well for the finals campaign. Dags took 5 for 28 (all caught by T Paine and coincidentally included 5 consecutive batsmen in the batting lineup in the scorebook) and bowled superbly. Brad took the first two wickets to fall and Big Jose took 3 for 9 and showed that he can quickly clean up the tail. Kingborough had been knocked over for 74 runs and the match was called to an end at about 5:00 p.m.
N.B. The good news is that Wade Stewart was diagnosed as having problems with the muscles in his chest and cleared of any heart problems. On behalf of the club, we wish him a speedy recovery.
