Report (by Mike Graham-Smith):

The first grade season got underway with a one-day match against an undermanned Glenorchy team at KGV Oval.

All players managed to get to the ground on time despite the confusion over starting times and most players managed to drive past the Royal Agricultural Show without dropping in for a look. (N.B. Beanie’s boot was filled with a number of showbags – Ansell, Barbie, AFL, Dulux & Selley’s No More Gaps) Beanie had also promised warm-up shirts and turned up with 5 of them. 5 does not equal 12 except for very large values of 5 Beanie!

The warm-up went swimmingly and everyone was chuffed to have the Godfather back at the club. Prior to the game, Nessy was initiated into the club and gleefully licked the fanny box and we welcomed back Bakesy after his sojourn to Scotland and subsequent nuptials and after a stint as the Lord Mayor of Wynyard.

The day began under cloudless skies but the forecast was for afternoon showers. As such, BT (going into his 20th season as first grade captain) won the toss and put the opposition in.

Nessy and Hilfy both hit the stumps early and we had two quick wickets. We thought we were on a roll but Cartledge and Knight held us up for a while. Knight, in particular, was looking very solid. Eventually, we claimed Cartledge and some gaps were starting to appear in Knight’s game. Anderson came to the wicket and threw his bat at everything quite effectively for a while. Butterworth and Anderson put together a good partnership, Hilfy hit Anderson’s off stump, Nessy hit Graham all over the place and we held Glenorchy to 175 runs after 50 overs. Hifly took 2 for 22 off his 10 and Nessy made an impressive debut in TCA cricket claming 3 for 23 off his 10 overs. Beanie bowled well and, in general, we fielded well but there are many areas to work on in both our fielding and bowling.

Our response with the bat began disastrously when Bakesy tried very hard to hit a very wide ball and just succeeded by toeing the ball to the slips cordon. However, this proved to be the only joy Glenorchy experienced with the ball. Lockdog joined his ‘kissing cousin’ at the wicket and they finished the job off for us. It was obvious to all watching that their batting has come on in leaps and bounds in the last six months. They both displayed good temperament and maturity with their batting and played very straight all day – a sign of good things to come!

Lockdog ended up 92 not out and Painey 69 not out – a good night beckoned on the circuit!

1,2,3 the Uni Boys are we……..

Nessy fumbled his way through the club song, Reeks mentioned something about cold showers and taking a dip in the Derwent after each day’s play, Beanie tried to find some records of his playing days at Glenorchy in the clubrooms, Bakesy left a cloud of dust hovering over the ground as he drove around the ground and we headed off to the Lions Den to cap off a good day for the Uni boys!
