Report (by Mike Graham-Smith:
The local derby promised to be a good match. The Bay were fielding a full strength side and we were close to full strength.
Richie won the toss and chose to bat on a newly prepared wicket. The outfield was wet so we expected the ball to get wet and hard to handle.
The 11:30 a.m. start time rolled around very slowly and 2 balls into the match we were off due to rain. A short time later we were back at the crease and it was obvious to all that the ball was decking around off the seam.
The inclement weather continued and we were dragging covers on and off pretty regularly. Painey fell early and Lurch followed soon afterwards. Lockdog and Richie took the score to 35 before Lockie had his stumps bent back. Richie had dug himself in and was showing real grit and determination. Unfortunately, the rest of the order failed to follow his lead and we lost wickets at regular intervals.
We were bundled out for 82. Only Richie could hold his head high as he had batted for nearly 2 hours in trying conditions.
We had to show something in the field. Birt (ex Glenorchy player) and Alex Doolan (son of former Uni player Bruce Doolan) opened up and showed application to the task at hand. Birt survived a strong LBW shout and the two openers took the score to 48 before a Josh Bean half-tracker claimed the wicket of Doolan.
Nessie bowled Bailey (ex Launceston) and a Bean full toss claimed the wicket of Polkinghorne (ex SA). By this stage, the merged entity had already passed our score. Hilfy trapped Birt LBW and the score was 4 for 95.
Downton (ex Lindisfarne / New Town) and Little (ex Launceston) combined for a good partnership and at stumps the combined side were 4 for 141.
A little more ticker was required on day 2.
Hilfy came out with a mean look on his face and claimed Little early, well caught by Bakes in gully, Doherty (ex Launceston) came to the crease and a few Wursthaus bumpers did the job. Griggs (ex Launceston) came to the crease and a few bouncers from Dags sorted him out as well. Coyle (ex Lindisfarne) came to the wicket. Hilfy bowled Downton and the Bay declared. We had spent an hour in the field and the Bay had made 14 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Well bowled Hilfy and Dags. A call up to the state side cannot be too far away for you both.
The deadly duo, Lurch and Paine, opened up in the second innings and took the score to 36 before King was caught bat-pad. Painey followed shortly afterwards caught at the wicket.
Once again, Lockyear and Richie combined for a good partnership. Their batting provided great entertainment for everyone at the ground. Richie showed that he is seeing the ball very well and Lockie hit the ball to all parts of the ground. Their partnership of 143 runs ended when Richie was dismissed for 96 runs. After this, we lost wickets regularly again and we were dismissed for 227 runs. Lockie was dismissed for 51 runs.
All up a very disappointing weekend of cricket. A win next weekend could turn it all around for us.
