(Day 1). Ten eager boys managed to find their way to Tynwald Park on time for the season opener against New Norfolk - including Cameron Burnett playing his first game for the club. Jimmy Hortle lost his first toss and the opposition captain ignoring the advice of his coach invited us to bat. Jimmy and Dominic headed out to the middle and the opening overs provided lots of activity as the batsmen scored freely and tested out the catching ability (or lack of) of the opposition. The total reached 37 before Dominic (14) lost his middle stump. Jimmy (27) and Julian (20) took the score to 64 before Jimmy found a fieldsman who could catch. James Barrenger (29) batted very well hitting a number of 4s - a great effort on a big ground. He was well supported by Cam Jefferey and Richard Lovell in the lower order. The team total reached 137 in the 49th over - and all batsmen got off the mark. (Day 2). So near and yet not quite near enough - that was the lament as the boys came off the field having lost by 1 run in their first game of the season - and then of course the what ifs and may be's!! The day started well with Julian and Josh bowling tightly and backed up by some keen fielding and catching that saw the score 3/20 at the first bowling change. James B. continued to keep things tight at one end and as the ground "dried" a little the runs started to flow and at the drinks break the opposition had raced to 4/105 off 25 overs. The boys returned to the field with renewed spirit and were quickly rewarded with wickets to Jackson and Richard - 6/130 with only 7 runs to play with. The spin twins, Dominic and Jimmy, bowled tightly with the sodden ball and suddenly it was 9/137 - a top edge over mid-off secured the vital single for New Norfolk and the innings was over a couple of balls later. Josh picked up a couple of catches behind the stumps and the fielding in difficult conditions was excellent. Playing one man short both days - and conceding 42 extras didn't help our cause! Well done on an excellent first up effort. |
