Report (by Matt Green):

(Day 1). On a perfect day for cricket the twos traveled to New Town and were greeted with what looked like a reasonable pitch. A head count during the warm up caused some consternation when we realised we were one short. A couple of quick phone calls later and Shawy was drafted in for his first game in a while (although I am not sure it was quite as long as the 40 years Grubby estimated).

The stand-in skipper called correctly and we chose to bat. We soon realised the pitch wasn't quite as good as it looked with some variable bounce. Kerm nicked one to the keeper which brought China (19) to the crease with Grubby, who was making it look easy with five 4's and a 6 in a quick fire 29. Despite Grubby making it look easy Kerm was still reluctant to give him too much credit - he stated he would jump off the local church tower if Grubby reached a ton!! Grubby and China formed a good partnership until Uni had a collapse with Grubby, China, Stevo and Greeny all getting out in fairly quick succession to leave us at a precarious 5/76.

Roachy joined Huddo at the crease with the team in trouble and proceeded to put on a magnificent partnership. The pair batted for nearly two full sessions to take the game away from New Town and in the process bring up their 200 partnership. Huddo finished 138 not out in a superb batting display on an unpredictable pitch and Roachy finished up just short of his hundred being bowled for a fluent 90 when he well and truly deserved the ton. Both showed tremendous concentration during the partnership and never looked like letting New Town back into the game.

The skipper then declared just past the 300 mark with 6 overs to bowl. Despite creating a couple of chances we were not able to break through but are still well on top with New Town needing nearly 300 next week. A disciplined bowling effort on an up and down pitch should see another Uni win next Saturday.

(Day 2) - Day two started well for the Uni boys with a fair bit of swing in the air and the pitch still playing up and down. Kibbs dismissed one of the Townies openers while the other continued his fine form from the previous week by racking up his 217th play and miss. At one stage he finally let one go without a big swish which prompted a loud chorus of Bronx cheers from the cordon.

Kibbs (2/36) and Joey chipped away and Huddo (2/44) grabbed one just on lunch to leave New Town 5/91 at lunch (all five wickets bowled). The follow on target was 205 so we were well and truly pushing outright points.

Unfortunately some good batting and some poor fielding on our part saw a couple of partnerships after the break that pushed New Town close to the follow on target. K was the unlucky bowler (2 dropped catches) of the session, bowling extremely well all day to finish with 1/15 off 16 overs. At tea we had New Town 8 wickets down with 10 runs required to pass the follow on.

New Town scraped past the follow on before Joey came back in to the attack to finish the innings (all out 222) and finish with the bowling honours for the day (4/28). A good return to form for Joey who bowled an excellent line and length all day.

Uni then had an hours batting practice with Remi (31 not out) and Grubby (26) getting amongst the runs. Kibbster was at his dashing best batting at number 3 to post a sparkling 1 not out. The day finished with Uni 1/61.

It was good to get the points and move to the top of the ladder; however we will need to improve on that performance in the run up to the finals. Huddo and Roachy apart, the top six batsmen under-performed against an average bowling attack and our fielding must improve (at least) a couple of notches.

Looking forward to a good hit out this weekend against Nth Hobart.
