(Day 1). After last week's stirring win, the 2nd Grade boys made the journey out to Pontville for a Grand Final replay against Clarence. Although both sides were without a number of players from last year, it still shaped as the heavyweight clash of the season thus far. The deck felt a little soft but with warm weather and winds forecast, it was sure to turn into a road later in the day. After losing the toss (again) and being chucked into the field, the skipper decided that Joe would become his 4th opening partner of the season - not bad considering it's round 6 and 1 of those was a complete wash-out. Debutant Matt Green also became the 20th player to play 2nd Grade this year - not bad considering its round 6 and 1 of those was a complete wash-out...hmmm - have I said that already? Their openers started solidly enough before one edged to Kerm at 2nd slip. The Kibster was brought on a short time later and, once he'd figured out the general basics of the LBW law, was able to pick up his first. I still can't believe he appealed at one stage and then answered his own question as to why it wasn't out..."because the batsmen hit it, it was going over the stumps and it didn't go anywhere near his leg". Debutant Green then chimed in with a perfect slower ball right on lunch giving Kerm catch no. 2. Joe came back after lunch to claim 2 wickets which brought Clarence's ice cream stand of Smith and Peters to the crease. As usual, they slogged their way to a decent partnership before Kibs removed Smith for 40. This brought Kerm's brother (and his hair) out to the middle but after some brotherly love sledging (some of which wasn't even English) he departed for slightly more than Kerm's season average. Greeny then came back to pick up the last to have the Roos all out for 205. Considering the heat, wind and the deck being a highway we were pretty happy with our efforts, with all bowlers taking at least 1 wicket. With over an hour until stumps, Jubby was also given a new opening partner as we decided to try and get some benefit out of China Jnr before he departs for the U19 Tournament next week. The boys didn't disappoint, working the total nicely beyond 50 with some good sensible batting before China smashed one to the mullet at mid-off. 1/56 became 2/58 at stumps when Jacko was given his 2nd stinker in as many weeks, LBW to a ball that hit him in the groin. So, with 140 odd still to get and 8 still in hand, we look forward to next week with the outlook of securing our first points for the year from the 2 day format. (Day 2). A good show of gutsy determination from Robert Jubb and lusty hitting by Matthew Green and Joseph Hoang secured 2nd Grade's first points from the 2 day format this season at Pontville on Saturday. After starting the day solidly but then stumbling to 5/103 at lunch, Jubb and Green combined for a 70 run stand before Hoang finished off the job, passing Clarence's 205 with 3 wickets in hand. Resuming at 2/58, Jubb and Andrew Matthews took to the middle, playing solidly and working the total to 75 before Matthews leaned over one to be trapped LBW. Jubb was then joined by Nicholas Grubb who worked his way to a start before being bowled by the worst ball ever seen in TCA 2nd Grade. Timothy Steven was next to depart, edging to 1st slip to make the score 5/90 just before lunch. But that was the last success for Clarence for quite some time as Green and Jubb set about turning the game back in the Lions' favour. Jubb's anchor role was the perfect support for Green who bludgeoned his way to 62 on debut before being caught in the covers. Remi Barley was next in and the pair took the score to 186 before Jubb was caught in the gully for a superb 57. Barley and Hoang then combined for the winning partnership, the latter playing his customary lofted drives and pulls to perfection, hitting the winning runs with a flick through mid-wicket to the boundary. The last 3 wickets fell relatively quickly once the game was in the bag. Barley was caught behind attempting to pull a ball that was so slow it hit the back of the bat. Hoang was next to go, run-out via a direct hit and Andrew Kibbey was last to depart for a blazing 3. A fantastic win for the boys, and although we aren't playing the sort of cricket we want to be playing yet with not enough of us showing the application required in all aspects of the game, a win is a win and sometimes you have to take them any way you can. |
