Report (by Kieron Mulcahy):
2'S JUGGERNAUT EXTEND STREAK TO 4 AND GRAB OUTRIGHT 2ND!
In (yet again) inclement weather conditions, the 2nd Grade Boys made a rare trip to their home hunting ground in an attempt to secure their 4th win on the trot and achieve one of their season goals of being top 2 at the break. And, despite it appearing as though everything was working against us for a large portion of the day, the juggernaut continues to build momentum in the right direction.
Because the game was switched to a Sunday which happened to be "the day after" from such events as end of year dinners, parties and weddings, the skipper wanted everyone there a little earlier so that a proper preparation (to wake everyone up) could be done. Needless to say he was relatively disappointed to see people still arrive late, then take 10 minutes to put a pair of spikes on, then walk out to warm-up without a cricket bat in sight. Luckily for the batsmen, he then proceeded to perform to his normal abilities and lose the toss, Dipper French having no hesitation in deciding to bat, a very good decision given that the game had already been shortened to 45 overs and with further rain and showers forecast the Lewis Crapworth system was sure to favour Kingborough even further as the day progressed.
So at 12:24pm, with a rather muddy section of the square threatening to injure players and make the ball a cake of soap, and no scoreboard available because the numbers had been locked up, we started the day. A wicket in the first over saw the Knights Pommy import stride out, but he kicked one from Joe back onto the stumps a short time after to have them 2 for something off some overs. Mono-Brow Gulline was playing his usual 1 shot over mid-wicket at the other end and pushed the score along to something before he mistimed one to the Albino off Kerm. 3 for something...then the Albino chimed in with 4, 2 of those in consecutive balls, the 1st of which was very well stumped by our pom! Greeny replaced Kerm and picked up two of his own to make it 9 for something before their number 11 tickled one to our Pom, Kingborough all out for 133.
Our innings started well, Kerm and Jubby pushing the score along to 39 in the 13th before rain caused a delay in proceedings. Enter the Lewis Crapworth method (or a subset of)...revised target down from 134 to 132...overs down from 45 to 41.
After the resumption, Jubby (13) edged behind, Kerm (31) and Huddo (2) followed a short time later to have us 3/60 from 20. Jacko was joined by Grubby and they patiently worked the score to 110 before Jacko departed for 38 then Grubby for 26 soon after that, leaving debutant SimBok and Greeny to finish the job. Nervous moments from all spectators were erased when Simmo smoked a straight drive for 4, and Greeny finished the job with his normal punishment of tripe bowling.
Four in a row, some good positive signs from the first half of the season and everyone keen to push on towards top spot and a good crack at the prize that eluded us last year.
