Our second grade match against the Sharks was played on Sunday (due to a number of TCA grounds being used for the Under 17 National Championships on the weekend) at Queenborough. We arrived at the ground on time (unlike most of the Sharks players) and found we were locked out. We all had a good laugh at the expense of Huddo and Kerm as we inspected the damage on their respective cars caused by a collision between the two of them - blame is yet to be established and the case in the hands of their lawyers. Eventually the gate was opened and we drove into Shark Park with the intention of making the hunters the hunted. The new skipper Cowboy X took the troops for a challenging warm-up. The Vietnamese Bandit and the Angry Horse found the end-to-end footy drill a little perplexing and it wasn't long before the white cricket balls replaced the red Aussie Rules football in the warm-up. X lost the toss but we were told to bat which we wanted to do anyway - was the toss necessary? Jubby and Kerm opened the batting. Their instructions were clear - see off the new ball and bat for 10 overs. They went about their business in a workman-like frame of mind and carried out their mission successfully. Jubb charged the spinner and missed it. Jacko and Kerm formed a good partnership before Kerm fell. X joined Jacko at the crease and the two moved the score on steadily before Jack fell LBW. Huddo and X formed yet another good partnership before X bunted one to short cover and called Huddo through. X was run out by about half the length of the pitch for 39 runs - a ludricous run! Huddo continued to hold up one end. Grubby came in and got a couple away before holing out in the run chase. Greeny hit the ball beautifully from the start and scored a quick fire 23 runs. The highlight of his innings was a lofted cover drive for 6. The Simbocca and Huddo batted out the innings - Huddo was caught at wide mid off for 38 runs off the final ball of the innings. Our batting effort had been steady without being spectacular. We had kept wickets in hand which was our aim and we were able to reach a score of 7 for 183. The lunch break entertainment was provided by Huddo who produced a finger zapping machine. Basically, 4 blokes put a finger into the machine and wait for a random length of time before the machine chooses a person randomly and gives them an electric shock. Jacko seemed able to withstand the zap very well prompting someone to suggest he must be well grounded by a third leg! Someone else suggested it would be a good drinking game. The Angry Horse suggested it was a bloody waste of money! The bowling plan was simple. Field better than them, catch better than them, bowl less wides and bowl a better line and length than them. The Effect and Shannon opened the bowling. Greeny was bowling into the bowl and his excellent spell of swing and seam bowling (combined with some inconsistent bounce in the pitch) had the opposition in immediate trouble. Greeny claimed two quick wickets and the Horse claimed three early ones as well. We had 5 early wickets and we were in charge of proceedings. All bowlers were struggling to control the swing and our wide count was climbing rapidly. Burger was thrown the ball and was told to 'Unleash the Beast' which he did to great effect. The Vietnamese Bandit was bowling dot balls or wides (unusual for him). He later confided that this was the first time he had ever bowled with a white ball! Kerm and Huddo were introduced to the bowling crease and bowled straight through. Kerm bowled with excellent control hitting off stump or just outside consistently and Huddo spun the ball wickedly on the 4 day old pitch. Kerm had 2 for 22 from his 10 overs and Huddo had 2 for 26 from his 10. Kibbster claimed 4 wickets and Greeny 2. We bowled the ladder leaders out for 136 runs to join them at the top of the table. Our catching was good - Jubby took two hard hit catches in front of his nose and Grubby took an excellent reflex catch at slips. Our ground fielding was terrible. The basics of getting a second bit of your body behind your hands must be adhered to. Our throwing to Remi was also poor as the majority of throws landed 5 or 6 feet in front of him. Nevertheless this was an excellent win which sets up the season for us. Well done the Scooby Doos! |
