Report (by Rod Purves):

Finally! A home game for the Uni 3's!!! For the first time this year we were allowed to step on to the hallowed turf of University oval to take on the New Town Bucks. As the club was depleted through the Hutchins school trip, state duty requirements, and other unavailabilities, the 3's wasn't as strong as it normally is, and the Bucks had 1st grade players Roussow and Westnall in their line up, so it was going to be a tough contest. We welcomed Fred Miley and Paul Ancher into the team for their first games of the year.

Rocket won the toss and elected to bat. Chicka and Fenna opened up, and we were travelling at 5 per over until Chicka mis-timed a pull shot to a dwarf at mid wicket who caught the ball in between his thighs.......... seriously! Ancs joined Fenna at the crease, and these 2 set about building a solid foundation, with lots of 1's and 2's. Ancs eventually got sick of running and unleashed with 2 consecutive boundaries, and we were looking good at 1/81 off 19.

Unfortunately, Ancs was bowled from the first ball of the 20th over for a well compiled 32. Hicks was promoted to 4 and looked good early. With the score on 113, Fenna was out for a solid 25. Hicks was out 4 runs later for 10, and the rest of us fell quickly, with the exception of Streety. The Street kid showed us how to apply ourselves and compile runs with little risk (until he started slogging in the last few overs!) and he ended up on 28 not out, as we finished with 160 off 40.

The Bucks openers (Roussow and Westnall) came out and teed off against the opening bolwers of Purves and Dare, taking the score to 53 off 7! The product struck in the 8th over, knocking over the castle of Roussow. Ancs and Lambert took over the bowling duties and both bowled well, Ancs rewarded with a wicket and finishing with 1/26 off 8. Girth had a catch dropped at mid off and bowled better than his figures show. The Enigma, Mike Bowman, came on towards the end and grabbed 1/7 off 4 (short balls are apparently wicket balls!), but the Bucks got the runs with 8.3 overs to go, for the loss of only 3 wickets.

A poor showing by the Lions, particularly on our home turf. The middle order needs to work on building the good starts we are getting, we need to bowl less wides so we don't keep giving away so many extras, and the fielding and catching needs to improve dramatically to reach the potential we know we can achieve. On a positive note, we did get to experience for the first time this season the busted savs the TUCC is famous for! The sight of naked meat by-products bubbling away in a pot with their red skins floating away was a sign that we were definitely playing at home, and we only get 1 other home game before finals, so I'm encouraging the newer boys to savour the experience........ and taste!
